WikiProject India
This project is a workgroup of WikiProject India, which aims to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India and India-related topics. If you would like to participate, please visit the project page.

Welcome to the India quiz. The quiz is a general knowledge quiz centred around India that any registered Wikipedians can enter. It is run as a friendly competition to test and improve your knowledge of India. Most importantly, it's supposed to be fun. The questions and answers would be condensed in the form of "Did you know..." facts on Portal:India to be updated once or twice a week. Also, the relevant articles that get quoted in these quiz questions would hopefully get a face-lift with increased attention as a result of the questions.

Rules

  1. All questions must have an India-related theme or India-related connection.
  2. Any registered Wikipedian can answer a quiz question, but to ask a question you must first earn the right by being the first person to answer the previous one correctly. If the current question is still open and you think you know the answer, post your answer below and wait for an adjudication from the person who placed the question. Remember to sign your post with ~~~~.
  3. If you are the first person to post the correct answer, the asker will post a message below your answer confirming you gave the correct response.
  4. You now have the baton and 24 hours to post a new question. If a new question is not posted by you within that time limit, the previous asker can post a new question in lieu of yourself.
  5. If the baton holder fails to ask the question within 2 days (48 hours), any wikipedian can ask the question on his behalf.
  6. When 25 questions have been asked, a round is over. The leader on the answer tally at the end of each round is declared the winner of the round. The questions asked during the round are archived.
  7. The leader-tally then resets with all users back to zero to begin the next round, with the user that answered the last question of the previous round asking the first question of the present round.
  8. To archive the page at the end of each round, see the archiving rules.

Question guidelines

  1. If you find that no-one is able to get the answer to your question, consider offering clues or replacing your question with an easier one. The aim is to keep the quiz moving.
  2. Remember that you may have an international audience. Keep quiz questions relevant to India in some way.

Q 48.01

Thanks Suresh and Dwaipayan. If someone doesn't mind taking over the next question (i.e. Q1) I would appreciate it. I am very busy next couple of days but I'll be back with a question after that. Sorry. Cribananda (talk) 22:57, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok here goes. (I haven't been keeping up with stuff here so pardon me if this turns out to be a repeat question).

He was born in Bombay in the 1920s. Tried his hand in politics and went to England where he majored in philosophy in the 40s. Worked on a ship in the 50s. Experimented with drugs in the 60s. Hosted a TV programme in the 70s. Won big awards in the 80s. His work is often found in English textbooks in India. Who? Cribananda (talk) 08:20, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Should be Nissim Ezekiel --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 08:49, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Correct! Your turn, Suresh. Cribananda (talk) 01:23, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Q 48.02

Connect the four: Berger paints, Sunday morning, A film featuring Kishore Kumar and A festival. You may come across minor spelling variations. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:01, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rangoli.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:06, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
100% Correct. A brand from Berger, A TV Programme on Doordarshan, A Hindi film and Diwali. Your turn, Dwaipayan --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 11:32, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Q48.03

His legacy continues on something that is more that 2,500 km long. His legacy continues on something that came to Kolkata minimum 34 tmes (may not be physically, but at least figuratively; and I am trusting wikipedia for this information). He was in Iran, Spain, and USA as a representative of government (again, trusting wikipedia). Name the person.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:24, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is it pertaining to Railways? --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 12:02, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, not related to railways (at least, I didn't find any connection with the railways).--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wild guess - is it Mortimer Durand? I'm still reading the article on him. Ha, I suspect I am right! The Durand Line and the Durand Cup which I suspect between Mohan Bagan and East Bengal Club came to Calcutta at least 34 times. Cribananda (talk) 17:56, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice cryptic question, Dwaipayan :-) Now I have to come up with something ( it's so hard!) Cribananda (talk) 18:07, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
