The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) is the organization that governs international chess competition. At monthly intervals, FIDE publishes ratings of the best international chess players, as well as a ranking of the top 100 active players. The Elo rating system is used.

Women may play in the same events as men in chess and are rated together with the men. As of December 2012, the highest rated woman player is Judit Polgár, ranked 41th, although Polgar has previously ranked as high as eighth.
