The 2012 Hama offensive is a military operation launched by the Syrian armed opposition operation on 16 December 2012 with the intent of taking control of Hama Province.

Background

Offensive

The rebel military council of Hama announced the start of the offensive on 16 December, giving government troops in the province an ultimatum to surrender to the Free Syrian Army within 48 hours.[1] Within two days, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that government troops had already been cleared from the small towns of Halfaya, Kafr Nabudah, Hayalin, Hasraya, and Shaykh al-Hadid. Four rebels and six government soldiers were reportedly killed in the fighting.[7] Rebels had advanced 40 kilometres (25 mi) south from Maarrat al-Nu'man and Jisr ash-Shugour, encountering little resistance.[8] Government positions in Khan Shaykhun and Mhardeh were reportedly under attack by rebel forces.[1]

On 18 December, brigades of the Free Syrian Army claimed in videos that they had captured Taybat al-Imam, Kafr Zita and all areas north of Hama city. There were also reports of fighting inside Hama city itself, with international analysts wondering if the Assad army was redeployed towards Homs and Latakia. It seemed that rebels had overrun the loyalist army lines north of Hama city within 48 hours[9]

On 19 December, Syrian rebels have captured at least six towns in the central province of Hama. Qassem Saadeddine, a member of the rebel military command, said most of the rural western part of Hama province was under the control of the rebels. Adding that towns taken by rebels included Lataminah, Halfaya, Kafr Nabudah, Hasraya, Taybat al-Imam and Kafr Zita, and that fighting had also broken out in the city of Hama itself.[10]

Between the 16 and 21 December, 50 rebels and 47 soldiers were killed in clashes in Reef Hama, according to the daily details provided by the Syrian Observatory for Human rights.[11][12][13][14]

On 23 December Activists on the ground report that military reinforcements, in the shape of several armed vehicles and personnel carriers, are being sent from Hama city to the town of Mork in Hama's countryside. The government is attempting to regain control of the town after rebels took control of several checkpoints in it. The town of Mork, as well as the towns of Halfaya and Taybat al-Imam, are witnessing large-scale migration out of the towns as a result of the several days of violence witnessed in them [15]

On 23 December, the LCC and SOHR reported that up to 200 civilians were killed by bombing from warplanes in the city of Helfaya while queueing for bread at a bakery.[16] The Syrian Government did agree that many women and children were killed, however they blamed rebel fighters who they say attacked the town.[17]

On 24 December jihadist rebels from the al-Nusra Front, as well as rebels from the Tribal battalions and the Jihadi Ahrar al-Sham, have taken over large parts of the town of Ma'an after violent clashes with the Syrian Army and the local pro-government militia. The town's inhabitants are largely considered to be sympathetic to the government and its residents are also predominantly Alawites, a sect that al-Nusra Front's ideology is hostile to. Eleven rebels were killed by the bombardment on the area around the town, there are reports that the rebels downed 1 fighter jet and destroyed 2 tanks during the clashes. There are also reports that the rebels killed no less than 20 members of the regular army and the pro-government militia. The town of Morek was bombarded by the airforce, in an attempt by the Syrian Army to regain control of the town. Rebel fighters took control of a checkpoint in the Sheizer area, and both sides suffered losses. 2 men were killed by the bombardment of Bseirin village, and the village witnessed intense clashes the same day with government forces suffering heavy losses.[18]

The Syrian Army retook the control of three Alawites villages, including Maan, repelling the jihadists who had entered the town two days ago.[19]
