Heart Lake, Minnesota Heart Lake is located in northwestern Minnesota, several miles west of Lake Itasca, which is believed to be the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

The lake itself is found in the Heart Lake Conservation Area in which trees are planted every year by students from the local elementary schools.
