Droidcon is the franchise name for a series of commercial conferences in Europe, focused on software development for Google's Android smartphone framework. In terms of significance, Android is the computer platform with the highest unit sales across the whole computer industry. Android devices out-sell Apple's iOS and iPad. Android devices out-sell Windows computers. Android devices outsell Nokia, Blackberry and all other smartphones. This establishes Android as the most significant product within the computer industry. The largest Android conference for software developers in Europe and India, Droidcon, is therefore also notable.
In Q4 2011, smartphone sales exceeded PC sales[1], [2], making smartphones the most important deployment platform within the computer industry. Android is the mobile platform with by far the largest installed base and sales, with 64% of the market in August 2012, compared with Apple's iOS 18.8% market share[3].
Android has thus consolidated its position as the most important platform, within the most important sector (mobile connected devices) of the computer industry. The Droidcon conferences [4],[5] are the largest Android developer conferences held outside the USA, serving the "most important sector (Android) of the most important computer platform (mobile devices)". Droidcon conferences are particularly notable for their size (number of attendees), duration (several year history now[6]), significance (targeting the most active part of the computer industry), and unique developer-led organization.
Droidcon [7] arose to fill the void that Google left through providing inadequate developer support and resources. Droidcon started in 2008 in Berlin, as a grass roots effort initiated by developers themselves. By 2012, Droidcon events were held in Berlin[8], London[9], Tunis[10], Bangalore[11], Romania[12], Amsterdam[13], and Murcia (Spain)[14]. The two biggest Droidcon events were in London and Berlin in 2012, with about 1000 attendees each.
Droidcon coverage in the mainstream press has been extensive, with many international conference announcements and reports over several years [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24] [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [30] There have also been mentions of Droidcon in "The Guardian" [6],[31], Mobile Entertainment[32], the Wireless Industry Partnership[33], and Mobile Marketing Magazine "Wifi App launches at Droidcon"[34].
