HP Client Automation software is a PC configuration lifecycle management tool from Hewlett-Packard for automating routine client (computing) management tasks such as operating system deployments and upgrades, patch (computing) management, application software deployment, application usage monitoring, security, compliance and remote system management.[1]

HP Client Automation has two versions that cover customers with different levels of IT sophistication, size and complexity. HP Client Automation Enterprise provides policy-based device management. HP Client Automation Standard delivers task-based PC management with out-of-the-box functionality.[2] Both versions of the software are sold as part of the HP Business Service Automation suite of products from the HP Software Division .

HP Client Automation Standard

HP Client Automation Standard is designed for customers who have up to 10,000 desktops, laptops and thin clients to manage.[7] Features include discovery and inventory of managed devices; software deployment; automated and continuous patch management; operating system deployment and migration, including personality backup and restore; acquisition and deployment of HP Softpaq systems, management of thin clients and Out-of-band management (OOBM).[8][9]

HP Client Automation Enterprise

HP Client Automation Enterprise can manage hundreds of thousands of client devices. It can be used to manage Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux desktops and laptops, HP thin clients, and Windows and Linux servers[10] and mobility support for Android and IOS devices.

HP Client Automation Enterprise Edition uses a desired state management model[11] where IT defines how it wants devices to look through a series of policies, while agents on client devices proactively synchronize and manage to that defined state.[12] This model results in higher levels of compliance while at the same time significantly reducing the amount of effort needed to manage the environment.[13] It is especially effective for notebook or laptop PCs because infrequent and lower bandwidth connections can limit the effectiveness of task-based models that are commonly found across the industry.[14]
