Milind Murli Deora (born 4 December 1976) is a Member of the 15th Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament of India, from the Mumbai South constituency.[1] Deora is the Minister of State with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications and the Minister of State with the Ministry of Shipping within the Government of India.[2]

Early life

Deora was born in Mumbai to veteran politician Murli Deora, who was a Member of Parliament for the same constituency between 1984 and 1996, and once again in 1998 in the 12th Lok Sabha. Deora is an alumnus of Cathedral and John Connon School, Sydenham College and Boston University in the United States. He has a B.A. in Business and Political Science from Boston University.[3]

Career

Deora is one of the youngest members of the current Lok Sabha.[4] He was elected from the same Mumbai South Constituency for the second time in the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections.

Milind Deora was inducted in the Union Government of India as the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology in 2011. Currently he is also the Minister of State for Shipping. He was given this additional charge in October 2012.[2]

Views and opinions

  • In written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Milind says that, WHO in its Fact Sheet No. 304, May 2006 on Electromagnetic Fields and Public Health (Base Stations and Wireless Technologies) has concluded that “considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF Signals from base stations and wireless networks caused adverse health effects. From all evidence accumulated so far, no adverse short or long term health effects have been shown to occur from the RF Signals produced by based stations.[5]
  • Milind Deora slammed Mumbai police for arresting two girls for their FB post questioning shutdown of the city for Bal Thackeray's funeral.[6]
  • Milind Deora, over the Delhi Rape case opines that -"the brutal and barbaric gang rape in Delhi, in my view was one of India's - and certainly urban India's - most socking act of violence, followed by spontaneous outrage and protest on our streets."[7] He said that the train of discussions, followed by the incident should have articulated, "What we as Indians need to do in our homes, and most importantly in our hearts and minds."[7]

Personal life

On 9 November 2008, Deora married Pooja Shetty in Mumbai. She heads the film production company "Walk Water Media" and is the daughter of film producer Manmohan Shetty, former Adlabs chairman, who established Walkwater Media Ltd in 2007.[8]

Milind is known for his hands-on approach and is popular among his constituents—who range from poor mill workers to multi-billionaire industrialists—for various initiatives he has taken in the area.[8] A good orator and debater, he is known among friends like Rahul Gandhi as well as parliamentary colleagues for setting up informal workshops that would deliberate on policies.[8]

Milind is an accomplished blues guitarist having several performances to his credit.[9] He has played numbers of rock legend Jimi Hendrix like 'Stone Free' and 'Manic Depression' as well as 'Better Watch Yourself' and 'I've been loving you'.[8][10] He has been playing the blues since his days at the Boston University. His brother Mukund is a Disc Jockey.[3] Milind also enjoys swimming and playing squash. He is the member of Breach Candy Swimming & Bath Trust; Bombay Gymkhana and Cricket Club of India.[2]
