Manyula (マニューラ Manyūra) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise. It is one of the “preview” Pokémon to the fourth generation of games, cards and anime, having been released prior to the release of the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl versions for Nintendo DS.
Manyula is the Japanese name for the Pokémon. Its English name has not been revealed yet.
Characteristics
Manyula takes on the appearance of a black, bipedal feline warrior garbed in a red crown and a red collar. It is said that its headgear is representative of the Aztec culture.
Manyula have three claws on each paw, instead of two like its pre-evolved form, Sneasel. Manyula are known to travel and live in pairs and are very mischievous.
In the video games
Manyula is to be one of the many new Pokémon introduced in the Nintendo DS versions of Pokémon, Diamond and Pearl. Because it is the evolved form of Sneasel, it is likely stronger and has better defenses (the fact that it looks like Sneasel wearing additional gear might signify that its speed rating will either remain static or actually decrease), and it is also expected to carry over its elements of Dark and Ice. However, it is unknown as to what method Sneasel can be evolved into Manyula. A confirmed attack for this Pokémon is Revenge.
Manyula is also to appear, albeit as a cameo, in another set of Pokémon games to be released prior to the DS versions, Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon. In it, Manyula is a collectible statue alongside the other currently known fourth generation Pokémon.
In the anime
Manyula has yet to appear in an episode, but it is briefly glimpsed in the American dub's eighth season opening sequence, dashing across the screen in a scene where Team Rocket and Manene dance and get spooked by it. However, fourteen episodes after the eighth season premiered, Manyula was cut out of the scene which it originally appeared in, along with Manene, leaving the scene incomplete, as Team Rocket now appears to get startled by Iron Tail. This likely means that Manyula will not appear in an episode of this particular season, but it might in the ninth season following it.
Movie Appearance
Manyula’s first official appearance is in the eighth Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. In it, two Manyula are under the command of Kid Summers, a female adventurer famous around the Pokémon world.
Near the start of the movie, Ash Ketchum and his friends partake in a ceremonial Pokémon tournament in Rohta, and he battles all the way to the final match between him and Kid (disguised as a male in medieval knight’s armor), where Pikachu battles one Manyula and wins.
However, Kid appears to be under the employ of an organization intent on capturing Mew, present in the region, in order to learn about its connection to the Tree of the World’s Beginning. When Mew does reveal itself at a certain point in the movie, Kid sends out her two Manyula to attack it and attach some sort of device, but they are foiled by Ash’s Pikachu and Mew escapes.
In other properties
In the trading card game
Manyula, being a fourth-generation Pokémon that has not been officially released in the United States, has not had a card printed in English thus far. In Japan, however, it is seen on several promotional cards, including two cards in the eighth Pokémon movie's promotional half-deck, representative of how the Manyula involved travel in a pair.
