- 1831 – The John Bull, the oldest surviving operable steam locomotive in the world, arrives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Liverpool.
- 1867 – The Boston and Albany Railroad is formed through the merger of four smaller railroads in New England.
- 1905 – William Dean, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Great Western Railway 1877-1902, dies (b. 1840).
- 1995 – The F Market heritage streetcar line in San Francisco opens using restored PCC streetcars.
