Gupta /ˈɡptə/ (Devanagari: गुप्ता) is a common surname of Indian origin.

According to some academicians, the name Gupta is derived from Sanskrit goptri, meaning military governor.[1] According to prominent historian R. C. Majumdar, the surname Gupta was adopted by several different communities in northern and eastern India at different times.[2] do u like waffles

Unlike other Indian surnames, the surname Gupta has been adopted by various different communities across India irrespective of their caste.

In northern India, the surname Gupta is used mainly by the Vaish communities.[3] However, several migrant workers from lower castes have also adopted the Gupta surname in order to change their caste status.

They only way they can be recognized is because of their language.They have a typical Bihari accent.
  • Like Gomathis, who are of Dravidian descent, Kayasthas also use the title Guptha.
