This is the unicode character (U+1F4AE) of a White Flower, a symbol used in Japan by school teachers to denote "brilliant homework" (花丸).[1] It is one of 722 Emoji characters included as part of the expanded [2] Unicode 6.0 standard. The unicode 6.0 tables show this character rendered as an empty white flower form while Apple's Emoji renders in red with additional characters inside.
