Kishoreganj (Template:Lang-bn) is an Upazila of Nilphamari District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh.

Geography

Kishoreganj is located at 25°54′40″N 89°01′30″E / 25.9111°N 89.0250°E / 25.9111; 89.0250 . It has 52000 units of house hold and total area 264.98 km².

History

This was named by the name of prince Kishore Chandro(Son of Horish Chandro,1800-1900).Kishorganj was known for Nil cultivation under British rulings. It was part Rangpur District and then separated 1983 into Niphamri.

Economics

The fertile land of kishoreganj produces mainly potato, rice, ginger and corn. The seasons first Potato harvest happens here and transported to all main cities at the beginning of December

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Kishoreganj has a population of 246201. Males constitute are 51.19% of the population, and females 48.81%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 122233. Kishoreganj has an average literacy rate of 18.2% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Education

The small town have some educational institutions like Kishoregonj High school, Kishoregonj girls High school, Shishu Nikatan High school and a college named Kishoregonj College.There have some B. M college which established, recently.

Administration

Kishoreganj thana was established in 1921 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 11 union parishads, 70 mouzas and 72 villages.

Main occupations

Agriculture 50.54%, agricultural labourer 30.93%, commerce 7.87%, wage labourer 2.58%, service 2.46% and others 5.62%.

Land use

Total land under cultivation 17411.17 hectares; single crop 13.58%, double crop 21.29% and treble crop land 65.13%.

Land control

Among the peasants 48.28% are landless, 12.37% small, 25.05% intermediate and 14.3% rich; cultivable land per head 0.15 hectare.

Main crops

Paddy, wheat, potato, onion, garlic, brinjal, sweet potato, kaun, patal, ginger.

Extinct and nearly extinct crops

Linseed, sesame, arahar and mustard seed.

Main fruits

Jackfruit, mango, papaya, banana and litchi.

Communication facilities

Roads: pucca 35 km and mud road 661 km.

Traditional transport

Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct), boat.

Manufactories

Ice factory 1, welding 7.

Cottage industries

Bamboo work 250, wood work 160, blacksmith 85, tailoring 290; cocoon produced by women labour.

Hats, bazars and fairs

Hats and bazars are 22, most noted of which are Kishoreganj, Tepa, Baravita, Magura and Paragram; fair 1 (Tatuar Mela).

Main exports

Paddy, potato, brinjal and ginger.
