The 2013 United Kingdom local elections are due to take place on Thursday 2 May 2013.[2] Elections will be held in 35 English councils, including all 27 non-metropolitan county councils, the five unitary authorities covering ceremonial counties, and three other unitary authorities, and to a single Welsh unitary authority. These elections last took place on the 4 June 2009 at the same time as the 2009 European Parliament Elections.
All registered electors (British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens) who are aged 18 or over on Thursday 2 May 2013 are entitled to vote in the local elections. Those who are temporarily away from their ordinary address (for example, away working, on holiday, in student accommodation or in hospital) are also entitled to vote in the local elections,[3] although those who have moved abroad and registered as overseas electors cannot vote in the local elections. Those who are registered to vote at more than one address (such as a university student who has a term-time address and lives at home during holidays) are entitled to vote in the local elections at each address, as long as they are not in the same local government area.[4]

Mayoral elections
Two elections for directly-elected mayors are due to be held. There was also a plan to have a mayoral election in Hartlepool, however a referendum in November 2012 resulted in the post being abolished from May 2013.[5]

In Wales, a single council, the Isle of Anglesey, will be up for election. This election was postponed in 2012, when all other Welsh councils were elected, in order to allow an electoral review to take place for the council.[7]
The Isle of Anglesey County Council election, 2013 will elect 30 members[8]
