This is a list of fictional characters from the PlayStation 2 video game series, Kingdom Hearts. Template:Spoiler

Main characters

As a teenager he has his share of concerns, but overall, he manages to keep an upbeat attitude. He seems too simple-minded at times, but he has a strong sense of justice. He lives for the simple pleasures of life, enjoying things like sunsets and ice cream; and loves his friends more than anything else. He'll even force himself to the limit to protect them from harm. Sora has always been very open with his emotions. He was the one who was chosen by the Keyblade to battle the Heartless. It was Sora who defeated Xehanort's Heartless (that called himself Ansem), ending his plan to shroud all worlds in darkness. However, Sora continued his journey, seeking Riku and the King, who were sealed behind the door to darkness. This journey took him to Castle Oblivion, when he thought that he was reunited with a friend named Naminé, but he was actually being used by Organization XIII. During Kingdom Hearts II, he searched for, and eventually found, Riku and the king, and defeated Organization XIII. Voiced by Haley Joel Osment in English version and Miyu Irino in Japanese version.

He may seem cool and collected for his age, but he is far from the quiet type. Always curious about the unknown, he begins to question the small, closed world in which he lived. Riku dreamt of seeing other worlds, and so he forsook the islands---only to be seduced by the power of darkness. He has a strong need to be needed by others, which makes him vulnerable. He's afraid that if the people he loves don't need him anymore, they'll eventually drift away. Riku will do whatever it takes to prevent that from happening, and has such a big ego that feelings like jealousy and rage get in the way of his good judgement, even if he is not a bad person. Riku, in all reality, is actually very fragile and easily manipulated.

Kairi arrived on the Destiny Islands, (where Sora and Riku lived) a few years ago. She may appear gentle and fragile, but she possesses a strong, good heart. She is also one of the seven "princesses of heart" which (when combined) can open Kingdom Hearts itself.

Naminé is Kairi's nobody, born when her heart was lost to Sora during a "rare occasion". A young witch who can manipulate memories. Under orders from Marluxia, Naminé shadowed Kairi and altered Sora's memory. Because Naminé is based on the false memories on Sora's feelings towards Kairi, Sora believed he and Naminé had been friends since childhood until he learned the truth he never met her. But the forgiveness in Sora's heart moved Naminé to disobey those orders she was given. Now she watches over Sora until the reconstruction of his memories is complete.

Roxas is Sora's Nobody, who was "born" when Sora stabbed himself with the Dark Keyblade and turned into a Heartless. Roxas had no memory of being Sora because of his "rare birth" and eventually left the Organization to find Sora. However, Roxas was captured by Riku and placed in DiZ's virtual Twilight Town. Roxas is the 13th member of Organization XIII, the "Key of Destiny", and controls the element of Light. He dual-wields the Oathkeeper and Oblivion Keyblades. He was previously known as the BHK (Blonde Hair Kid) for obvious reasons.

Court wizard and loyal servant to King Mickey. He embarks on a journey to carry out the missing king’s orders. A feisty, impatient magician whose antics are a real highlight of Sora’s story. Voiced by Kōichi Yamadera in the Japanese version and Tony Anselmo in the English version.

Captain of the Royal Knights, a soldier who despises weapons and who uses a shield against his enemies. Under the king’s orders, he accompanies Donald on the quest to find the key. An easygoing, clumsy knight whose endearing charm evokes smiles even in the worst of times. Bill Farmer, is his voice in English version and Yutaka Shimaka, the Japanese .

Pinocchio's conscience. He's along this quest as the royal chronicler, recording information about people, places and events in his journal.

The ruler of Disney Castle, he left his world when the Heartless began to attack. While he had Donald and Goofy find and protect the KeyBlade Master, Mickey was on a mission of his own. In Kingdom Hearts II, he returns and plays a bigger role, wielding a keyblade as he does. While he knows of Riku's whereabouts, he has promised Riku not to say anything to Sora. Wayne Allwine provides voice in the English version.

The king’s pet dog. Extremely loyal to the king, Pluto shows up at unexpected times, such as at the end of the original Kingdom Hearts, when he brings Sora a letter with the king's seal. Pluto is led many places and eventually finds Kairi and keeps her company in the castle of the Organization.

A sorceress of awesome power. She leads villains who seek to harness the power of darkness, urging them to be careful not to let it overwhelm them. However, unknown to her, the Heartless she believes she is using are, in fact, using her. Riku (possessed by Ansem) unlocks her heart and turns her into her dragon form. Sora defeats and kills her, but she is resurrected in Kingdom Hearts II.

In Kingdom Hearts II, Pete is one of the main villains Sora and co. had to deal with. He was originally a Captain from the Disney Castle world, referring to Mickey as the "boat boy king", but was banished to another dimension for his evil ways. However, he was freed by Maleficent, and he vowed to help her conquer the worlds, or as he said "have her help me take over".

A student under Ansem (who would later be known as DiZ), Xehanort had no memory of his life prior to Ansem's finding him. While studying the heart and the darkness within it, he began to assume the identity of his former master and ultimately destroyed his world out of his hunger for knowledge. He sacrificed his body in the process, becoming a heartless-like being. To open the door to darkness, Xehanort used Malificent to gather the seven Princesses of Heart for him. He then possessed Riku's body to regain his physical presence. But although his goal was realized, Xehnanort meets his demise at Sora's hands. He is also the person who probably upgraded the MCP during his time in Hollow Bastion.

The mysterious group of thirteen who study the inner workings of the heart in an attempt to become whole again. The first six members are the nobodies of DiZ's former disciples.

Formerly Ansem The Wise. As a researcher and ruler of his world, he studied the Heartless and delved into the many secrets of the worlds. DiZ appeared before Riku in the guise of Xehanort, presenting him with choices regarding the darkness within his heart. DiZ's intentions are a mystery but revolve on the Organization. and in Kingdom Hearts II he uses a device that trys to turn Kingdom Hearts into data, he does fail, but helps Sora and the gang by using it to destroy Kingdom Hearts (he dies in the explosion). In Kingdom Hearts II, it is revealed that his name is an acronym for "Darkness in Zero".

The Heartless, in essence the darkness created when a being succumbs to the darkness in their heart, appear out of nowhere. Their origin and purpose are surrounded in mystery. The Heartless cast the world into darkness, stealing away people’s hearts. They attack Sora and his world without mercy, drawn to him by the fear of the keyblade that he possesses. There are two main categories of heartless (emblem and natural) and stronger heartless are more beastlike than the weaker.

Creatures sharing an in-between existence. They are born from the bodies of strong-hearted people who lost their hearts to the Heartless. But unlike the Heartless, Nobodies attack people out of confusion for a need to be complete. White in appearance, these they are controlled by stronger form of Nobody, Organization XIII.

An innocent, carefree girl. She is very outgoing. She always wants to be the leader of the group, and gives Wakka a hard time. In "Kingdom Hearts II", she is very friendly with Kairi, and mentions Tidus and Wakka, who are absent in the game.

A soft-hearted youth with a stubborn streak. He plays the dependable big brother, teaching the others many things. He envies Riku because he is good at everything. He does not make an appearance in "Kingdom Hearts II," but he is mentioned by Selphie as constantly playing his game (blitzball) with Tidus.

A cheerful, strong-willed excitable boy who gets carried away rather easily. He is very confident in his athletic skills and often challenges Sora to practice duels. He also thinks he himself is a champ at everything. Like Wakka, he does not make an appearance in "Kingdom Hearts II", though he is mentioned by Selphie.

Sora's Mother

Never actually seen in the game, but calls Sora down for dinner; Sora quickly forgot about her after seeing the storm and went to the Island to check the raft. Not officially confirmed to be Sora's mother.

While their home was taken by the Heartless, they departed for Traverse Town. After they returned, they set out to restore their home.

A swordsman in Traverse Town who fights the Heartless. He is reticent and often seems aloof. His real name is Squall Leonhart, a name he has vowed not to use until the Heartless are defeated. In "Kingdom Hearts II," he and his group return to Hollow Bastion, to start rebuilding their old home. In the original Kingdom Hearts, he is found along with his teammates, Yuffie and Aerith in a small house in the Third District that they use as a hideout. Later in the game, he is found in the Hollow Bastion Library, searching for books that explain how to 'vanquish the darkness'. He fights alongside Sora at several points in Kingdom Hearts II, as well as competing with him in the Coliseum.

A female ninja (kunoichi) working with Leon. She is a free-spirit and somewhat self-centered. She helps Leon rebuild Hollow Bastion in "Kingdom Hearts II".

A pure, youthful woman allied with Leon, Yuffie, and Cid. She fights the Heartless alongside Sora and the others, and stands strong in the face of adversity.

Watches the accessory shop in Traverse Town. Later in the game he leaves his post at his shop and sells gummi blocks instead. He can be crass, but he is honest as well. He also has uncanny dexterity for a simple shop owner. Cid has a reoccurring role in the Final Fantasy series.

The Moogles are the individuals in charge of the synthesization workshop, where the player can create a variety of items and equipment, including a keychain for the most powerful keyblade. Moogles are well known for their roles in the Final Fantasy series.

A mysterious warrior who wields an impressive sword. He keeps much to himself, which makes him much of an enigma. What is he seeking? In the original Kingdom Hearts game, Cloud is in most of the tournaments in the Olympus Coliseum and Sora and co. are forced to fight him. Sora tells Cloud that he will find his light. And Cloud fights Sephiroth in the final mix version. In Kingdom Hearts II, Sora helps Cloud find Sephiroth, and Cloud and Sephiroth fight for the last time with Tifa, Sora, Donald and Goofy's help. It has been confirmed that he had been looking for Sephiroth, who embodies Cloud's dark side, to settle the fight against darkness. It turns out that it was Tifa who was Cloud's light. Cloud is voiced by Steve Burton.

A young woman who is very nice, but not afraid to use force when necessary. Unflinching and unrelenting, she is searching far and wide for a very close friend of hers, a young man with very spiky hair...Otherwise known as Cloud. She was the one who showed up and gave Cloud his light in their showdown against Sephiroth, helping him greatly.

A dangerous warrior. He wields a long sword that only he has the capability of using (which seems to be twice as long as its Final Fantasy VII counterpart). He also had a single, black wing in the first Kingdom Hearts, but now has three in Kingdom Hearts II. He appears in the Olympus Colliseum as one of the toughest bosses in the game. He returns in Kingdom Hearts II seeking Cloud, and Sora's keyblade. However, his main storyline shows up as that of convincing Cloud to give in to the Darkness. Tifa comes in time to the confused Cloud to aid him with their (Cloud and Tifa's) light to overpower Sephiroth. In the end of the fight, a glowing Cloud jumps in to a floating Sephiroth to finish but they disappear, leaving Tifa searching for Cloud again. It could be suspected that Sephiroth or Cloud is a Nobody of the other (Goofy said that Sephiroth did bear a resemblance to Cloud, more than likely because his eyes have been changed from their original green to a light blue)

Three fairies that appear in Hollow Bastion; while they were consumed by the darkness upon the destruction of their world, the purity of their hearts allowed them to become fairies instead of Heartless. They call themselves as "The Envoys of Peace" and are treasure fanatics. They were secretly working for Maleficent, who had them spy the Hollow Bastion Reconstruction Committee, until Maleficent left them to fend for their selves during the massive battle. But by Donald's lie, the trio began to work for Leon who was said to have more treasure then their former employer. But the three learned the truth and wanted payback on Sora for it. However, learning of everything Sora and friends went through, the fairies decided to let Sora and gang off the hook. Two kids that are along with Seifer as his "posse". Rai is a boy who respects Seifer deeply, usually ending his sentences with "y'know". Fuu is a young girl who is very calm and says only few words that are only necessary in a conversation.

A young boy blackmage who lives in Twilight Town and is along with Seifer. Vivi respects Seifer very much, and wants to prove to Seifer that he can be very loyal to him. In DiZ's Twlight Town, Vivi was one of the usual abnormalities as his residal form was used by the Nobodies on two occasions. He first appeared on Final Fantasy IX.
