Evander Holyfield vs. George Foreman, billed as The Battle of the Ages, was a professional boxing match that took place on April 19, 1991 for the WBA, WBC and IBF Heavyweight championships.

Background

Holyfield was coming off an impressive victory over James "Buster" Douglas in which he knocked out the champion in the third round to win the WBA, WBC and IBF Heavyweight championships. Foreman was a perfect 24–0 with 23 of his wins coming via knockout since ending his 10-year retirement in 1987. With Foreman's popularity at an all-time high, Holyfield agreed to put his Heavyweight championship on the line against the 42-year old Foreman. Holyfield was given a $20 million payout, while Foreman took home a guaranteed $12.5 million.

The fight

Holyfield ultimatly won the fight via unanimous decision, winning all three judges scorecard by scores of 116–111, 117–110 and 115–112. Foreman, however, impessed many by going the distance with the much younger champion. The fight's round 7 in which Foreman knocked Holyfield off balance before being staggered himself by a powerful combination by the champion was named "Round of the Year" by The Ring magazine.

Box office

Heavily anticipated, the fight was a huge success financially, grossing $55 million in the United States from pay-per-view sales alone with an estimated 1.45 million homes purchasing the fight. An addtional $8 million was earned from the live gate with an estimated 19,000 fans attending the fight.
