"DNA" is a single by British girl group Little Mix taken from their debut album of the same name. The single is the group's follow-up to their first original track "Wings", and their third single overall. The single's lyric video was debuted on YouTube on 1 October 2012 and subsequently received its first airplay on Capital FM on the same day while the music video was released on 19 October. Musically, "DNA" is an electropop song with dubstep influences while the lyrics speak of obsession. Critics positively reviewed the songs prasing the girl's vocals as well as the production and lyrics The song peaked at number three in the UK and number eight in Ireland, becoming their third top ten single in both countries
Background
On 17 September, the album's artwork was unveiled via the group's official Facebook page, which also confirmed that the album's second single, "DNA", would premiere on radio on 1 October and announced the date of the single's release as 12 November—a week prior to the release of the album.[1] Jesy Nelson said that "DNA" shows a "totally different side to Little Mix".
DNA was first performed at the Radio 1 Teen Awards 2012.
Critical reception
Jon Hornbuckle of So So Gay described "DNA" as "an addictive slice of dark pop, with the chorus breakdown remaining not only a highlight on this track, but of the entire album."[2] The song was well-received by Vicky Newman from Shields Gazette, who felt that it demonstrates the group's "stunning" harmonies and allows their voices to "shine". Newman also wrote that the song's urban edge manifests Little Mix's growth and development.[3] Gigwise's Andrew Trendell praised the track's production, writing, "The skittering beats and little quirks of [...] 'DNA' make it instantly memorable."[4] Adrian Thrills of Mail Online complimented the song's choral middle-eight, deeming it "an inventive sonic flourish".[5] "DNA" was described as "pop perfection" by Lewis Corner of Digital Spy, who highlighted the song's "spooky synths, pumping heartbeats and gothic choir finale".[6] John Earls from British newspaper, Daily Star, positively reviewed the single, calling it "a winning formula," in addition to awarding it a nine out of ten rating. Earls went on to mention that the song is "A regal anthem that'll have all of Girls Aloud wondering how they didn't release it first, the Little Mixers are sounding huge at last."[7]. Eve Barlow for NME likened the song to Katy Perry's "E.T." and described it as "a banger".[8] According to Hackford Jones of music website, Pressparty, "DNA" is "a storming slice of future-pop" and "a vibrant and commanding modern-day pop anthem that has the Little Mix personality stamped all the way through it."[9] Popjustice ranked "DNA" as the second best single of 2012 in their 'Top 45 Singles of 2012,' writing, "This is piece of pop art so exquisite and so important to this generation and all generations to come that it should be stored in the V&A".[10]
Live performances
The group performed the new single live on BBC Radio 1's Teen Awards 2012 along with "Wings".[11] On 24 October 2012, the group performed an a cappella version of "DNA" during a live UStream video.[12] They performed the song on The X Factor on 11 November 2012.
Music video
A lyric video for the song was released on the band's official Vevo page on YouTube on 1 October 2012.[13] In the run-up towards the release of the official music video, four teaser clips were unveiled daily, starting on 15 October. Each featured a different member of the group counting down the number of days until the premiere. The music video was released on 19 October.[14]
The video depicts the four girls who are apparently obsessed with a boy named Ryan. Perrie is seen to be the kidnapper, driving while Ryan is tied up, Jade is outside the culprits house spying on him, Jesy is also in a car being chased by the police possibly distracting them and finally, Leigh-Anne is in a room which portray dozens of photos of Ryan showing is the main leader. In the final scene, Ryan is tied to a chair while the four girls approach him, the scene cuts to black while a music box plays and ends with the words 'To be continued'
