The Article Feedback Tool project (AFT) is an initiative of the Wikimedia Foundation. The goal of this project is to engage readers to participate on Wikipedia and become editors over time. It also aims to help editors improve articles based on useful reader feedback.

A new version of Article Feedback Tool (AFT5) can now be tested on a prototype site. An older version was tested on 10% of the English Wikipedia from July 2012 to February 2013. The tool is now available on a small number of articles on the English Wikipedia and the German Wikipedia. English editors who wish to enable AFT5 on articles they watch can simply add :Category:Article Feedback 5 to these articles – the feedback form will automatically appear at the bottom of these pages. A final release of this reader engagement tool is expected on multiple sites in late March 2013. To learn more about next steps about Article Feedback, check the 2013 release plan.

A new Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool (AFTv5) is now being developed, tested on this prototype and deployed gradually on multiple sites such as the English, French and German Wikipedias. Its main goal is to provide new ways for readers to contribute productively to building the encyclopedia.

For Version 5, the Foundation replaced the current ratings system from AFT4 with "comment" boxes, to invite constructive suggestions for improvement. This new version of Article Feedback engages readers to make suggestions about articles they are reading — and invites editors to improve these articles based on this feedback. Wikimedia's research also suggests that this new tool can help readers become editors over time.
A new version of Article Feedback (AFT5) was released in April 2013 on the English, French and German Wikipedias, for evaluation by their communities. Article Feedback engages readers to make suggestions about articles they are reading — and invites editors to improve these articles based on this feedback. This version aims to surface useful feedback and increase editor productivity, with new features such better filters, simpler moderation tools and talk page integration.

AFT5 is available on an opt-in basis to editors interested in reader comments for articles they watch on the English Wikipedia. To enable feedback on articles you are working on, simply add this 'Article_Feedback_5' category to your pages. The Foundation is currently developing and testing this new tool through limited pilots on the English and German Wikipedias -- and soon on the French Wikipedia as well. After the French and German communities have had a chance to evaluate this tool, they will vote on whether or not to deploy it more widely; based on the outcome of these first pilots, the tool may be deployed on other projects as well, as outlined in this 2013 release plan.

The Article Feedback Tool was initially deployed in 2010, and the latest version (V4) features a rating form at the bottom of each Wikipedia article, asking readers to "rate this page" on a scale from 1 to 5, using four different metrics: trustworthiness, objectivity, completeness and writing quality (see image). (Note that this earlier version AFTv4 has now been disabled on the English Wikipedia, at the community's request.) This version was intended to do two things: first, give the Wikipedia community a new tool for assessing article quality; second, provide a way for Wikipedia readers to get involved as editors. This tool enables anyone to rate a page, and some users are presented with a call to action asking "Did you know that you can edit this page?", with an edit button.

The Foundation is now recommending that Version 5 be used instead of Version 4, because it appears more effective as a reader engagement tool. AFT4 has been removed on the English Wikipedia.

New moderation tools

A new version of Article Feedback (AFT5) was released in April 2013 on the English, French and German Wikipedias, for evaluation by their communities. Article Feedback engages readers to make suggestions about articles they are reading — and invites editors to improve these articles based on this feedback. This version aims to surface useful feedback and increase editor productivity, with new features such better filters, simpler moderation tools and talk page integration.

AFT5 is available on an opt-in basis to editors interested in reader comments for articles they watch on the English Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation is now wrapping up new development for this project, fixing any critical bugs that remain, and will collect community suggestions for the next few months -- to prepare for upcoming votes on the French and German Wikipedias later this year. To learn more about next steps about Article Feedback, check the 2013 release plan. The foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Wikipedia community members who helped create Article feedback. We look forward to more collaborations on future editor engagement projects.

Version 4

The Article Feedback Tool was initially deployed in 2010, and the previous version (V4) features a rating form at the bottom of each Wikipedia article, asking readers to "rate this page" on a scale from 1 to 5, using four different metrics: trustworthiness, objectivity, completeness and writing quality (see image).
