Frontiers is a Swiss academic publisher of peer-reviewed, open-access journals[1] currently active in the STM (science, technology and medicine) fields.

The project was started in 2007 by a group of active scientists within the Neuroscience community[2] and it expanded to other academic fields.[3] Frontiers was founded by Henry Markram[4] and Kamila Markram,[5] scientists at the EPFL in Switzerland.

The web-based publishing platform offers semi-automated submission and processing, interactive peer-review, and open access publishing of research articles.[3]

Journals

The first journal in the Frontiers series was Frontiers in Neuroscience,[6] which opened for submission as a beta version in 2007, and for official submissions January 2008. In 2010, Frontiers launched another eleven field journals in medicine and science.[7][8][9][10]

In February 2012, the Frontiers Research Network was launched,[11] a social networking platform for researchers, intended to disseminate the open-access articles published in the Frontiers journals, and to provide related conferences, blogs, news, video lectures and job postings.[12]

Business model

Frontiers applies a hybrid model with a commercial publishing company, Frontiers Media SA, and a non-profit foundation, Frontiers Research Foundation.

According to the Frontiers website, the company, Frontiers Media, "operates the open-access publishing on an author-pay business model, but has a commercial mandate to develop multiple revenue streams that can be used to support open-access publishing, as well as a technology mandate to ensure that scientists benefit from cutting edge IT technologies. Frontiers Media is also financially supporting and sponsoring Frontiers Research Foundation to achieve its social mission".[13]

Also, according to the Frontiers website, the foundation, Frontiers Research Foundation, "has a social mandate to help the public understand research and its value to society, ignite innovation and spark curiosity in research. The first initiative to "ignite innovation" in Africa is being launched in South Africa, as Frontiers Research South Africa.[14] The Frontiers Research Foundation also grants awards to researchers".[15]
