William Graham Tullian Tchividjian (pronounced cha-vi-jin), known as Tullian Tchividjian (born July 13, 1972), is senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, a visiting professor of theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, and a contributing editor to Leadership Journal.[2] He has written several books about Christianity and current issues.
Biography
Early life and education
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Tullian Tchividjian, as he is called, is the son of Virginia Leftwich (Gigi) Graham and Dr. Stephan Tchividjian, a clinical psychologist, who is of Swiss-Armenian ancestry. Tullian is the grandson of evangelists Billy and Ruth Graham.[3]
A graduate of Columbia International University (in philosophy), he earned an M.Div. degree at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America.[2]
Career
Tchividjian was the founding pastor of New City Presbyterian Church, an Evangelical Presbyterian Church congregation. It had 600 members by the time it merged in April 2009 with Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, a mega-church of 2200 members in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Tchividjian had been called there as pastor in 2009.[3][4]
After taking over as pastor at Coral Ridge, Tchividjian instituted sweeping changes. He made the services more contemporary and significantly deemphasized politics. Coral Ridge had long been reckoned as one of the most politically active churches in the country.[citation needed]
Tchividjian's opponents garnered enough support to force a congregational vote of confidence,[3] but a solid majority voted to retain him as pastor. Afterward, more than 400 members, including a large part of the music ministry, broke off to form "The New Presbyterian Church."[3]
Tchividjian's tenure has failed to bring much stability to the church. Since he has been installed as head pastor in 2009, the church has had 5 worship pastors, 4 children's pastors, 3 student pastors, 2 executive pastors, and seen the opening and closing of various outreach ministries and programs.[5] Coral Ridge has also failed to return to the same levels of weekly attendance that it saw directly before he became head pastor.
