Fifth Harmony is an American five-piece girl group formed in 2012, consisting of members Camila Cabello, Normani Kordei, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Hernandez and Dinah Jane Hansen.[1] They were formed exclusively for the second season of The X Factor, where they finished in 3rd position. Following their success, they signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records and also L.A. Reid's record label Epic Records.[2]

History

2012: Formation and The X Factor

Fifth Harmony is composed of five solo artists who met during boot camp for the second season of The X Factor (U.S. TV series). The members of the group are Dinah Jane Hansen, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, Normani Korgai, and Camila Cabello.[3] They successfully auditioned as soloists, but failed to progress individually to the judges' homes. They were later formed as a group by Simon Cowell, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category. The group was originally called Lylas, but then they changed to 1432, before finally being named Fifth Harmony after Simon decided for fans to choose the name. They finished 3rd behind Carly Rose Sonenclar and Tate Stevens[2] and become the first group to ever become the Top 3 of the competition.

Fifth Harmony (formerly LYLAS and 1432) performed the following songs on The X Factor:[4]

2013-present

On 14 January Fifth Harmony was voted the "Next Pop Superstar of 2013" by Popdust Magazine[5] Three days later on 17 January 2013, the group signed with Epic Records and Syco Music[2] and exactly one month later, began working on their debut album. The debut album scheduled to be released in the fall of 2013 is being executive produced by multi-platinum producer-songwriter Julian Bunetta (One Direction, Boyz II Men, Flo Rida, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis).[6] While in the studio the group has recorded and released on YouTube several notable cover songs. Thinkin Bout You by Frank Ocean, American by Lana Del Rey,[7] Lego House by Ed Sheeran,[8] Stay by Rihanna[9], Red by Taylor Swift and Mirrors by Justin Timberlake with Boyce Avenue

Members

  • Karla Camila Cabello: Her first audition was "R.E.S.P.E.C.T" by Aretha Franklin. Camila first auditioned for the producers part of the audition and she got the call back saying that she will audition for the judges as an alternative, meaning that if after the show if they were to have time then she would be able to audition, After the show Camila was ready to sing for the judges but then the producers told her that there was not any time left and she started to cry, then Camila saw Simon and asked him if she could audition and he said yes. After her audition she got a yes from all four judges, but it's unknown what most of them said.[citation needed] Demi Lovato said that she wanted Camila to try a more pop song for bootcamp.[10]
  • Lauren Michelle Jauregui: Her first audition was "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. Is currently in a relationship with Camila Cabello.
  • Ally Brooke Hernandez
  • Dinah Jane Hansen Her first audition song was "If I Were a Boy" by Beyonce Knowles
  • Normani Kordei Hamilton: Her first audition was "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin. Normani Kordei's interests lie in singing, gymnastics, dance, and ballet. She has been competing in beauty pageants since she was little. Just recently she was competing in the Miss Texas beauty pageant and made it all the way to the finals but instead insisted on competing for The X Factor.[11][12] Other reports indicated Normani Kordei and The X Factor teens category Arin Ray's "friendship" caused a feud with the producers of The X Factor and Cowell, stating that it's against the rules for any contestant to be in a relationship prior to the show.[13][14][15]
