The Guam Police Department (Template:Lang-ch) is the primary law enforcement agency in the United States territory of Guam. The department has jurisdiction across the entire territory, to include the areas covered by the port, airport and military bases. The department is tasked with serving and protecting an estimated 159,358 citizens across 209 square miles with just over 300 Sworn full time officers and 100 Sworn reserve officers.

The police department is headquartered in the Guam Police Department Building in the Tiyan area of Barrigada,[1] and operates four precincts.[2]

History

The Guam Police Department was created in 1949. Prior to this, law enforcement on Guam was handled by the U.S. Navy administered Guam Insular Guard and the civilian run Guam Insular Patrol Force.[citation needed]

Precincts

The Guam Police Department currently operates out of four precincts: Dededo Precinct, Tumon-Tamuning Precinct, Agana Precinct, and Southern Precinct. Each precinct is responsible for responding to calls within their geographical areas known as beats.

Police Officers assigned to patrol are equally divided among the four precincts to provide consistent manpower despite the differences in civilian populations with an estimated 34 officers per precinct.

Dededo Precinct is in charge of protecting a low estimate of at least 65,473 citizens within Dededo, Yigo, parts of Harmon, Mangilao and Barrigada Heights. Tumon-Tamuning Precinct covers Tumon, Tamuning, Parts of Harmon and East Hagatna with an estimated population of 19,685 citizens. Tumon-Tamuning Precinct also has to deal with the additional thousands of tourists that frequent the area daily. Agana Precinct is responsible for Agana Heights, Hagatna, Maina, Sinajana, Barrigada, Mangilao, Chalan Pago, Ordot and half of Yona. The combined area has an estimated population of 48,404 citizens. Southern Precinct handles the areas of Asan, Piti, Agat, Santa Rita, Talofofo, Merizo, Umatac, Inarajan, and half of Yona with an estimated population at 20,870 citizens.
