File:Xbox One Console and Controller.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Billybobjoe997 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Fails NFCC criteria 1 - "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." - That there is no free version now does not take away from the fact that as late as the day of release or as early as E3 in a few weeks, there are going to be opportunities to take pictures of this and release them under free licenses. Just as we don't use non-free images of living people while we wait for someone to take a free one, we should not use non-free images of products while we wait for a free one. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:29, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep - The big difference here is that while there is a reasonable expectation that it is possible to obtain a free image of an individual now even if none are available now, it's not possible now to to get a free image of the Xbox One as there simply aren't any available. After release or E3 that will be different but, for the present, there is no possibility of getting a free image so, right now there is "no free equivalent available, or that could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose". --AussieLegend () 03:40, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Aussie. Right now, the image is not replaceable.  — TORTOISEWRATH 04:24, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep The Xbox One wasn't released yet, thus a free alternative isn't available. Thus the image now is not replaceable. Armbrust The Homunculus 08:12, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This is the only official image of the console is from Microsoft, which is non-free. For now a free image of the console can't be found anywhere else, so until E3, this image should be kept. Giggett (talk) 12:08, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep As it's used for purely illustrative purposes, and per Aussie's observations. --Jasca Ducato (talk) 12:13, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Check WP:NFCI §10. Photos of deceased people are disallowed if there is a reasonable expectation that it will be possible to obtain a free image at some point in the future, even if this currently isn't possible. This seems to be similar: it will be possible to obtain a free image once the product is available on the market. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:13, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Deceased people were alive at one stage so it's generally expected that free images will exist somewhere (for people born in the last 100 years or so). That's not an expectation we have with this. It has never been alive. --AussieLegend () 19:44, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also if NFCI 10 was meant to deal with non living objects it would have used more general terms and not only mention deceased people.--174.95.111.89 (talk) 22:26, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - It may be replaceable in a few weeks, but right now it isn't.--Rockfang (talk) 21:52, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep I'm going to repeat what I said about Xbox One Controller.jpg: The image as educational value in that its shows readers what an Xbox One [controller] looks like and their is no free image of it at this time. I'm sure someone will a eventually make a free image of it, but their not reason to wait until that time to have images in the Xbox One article. The non-free images can simply be removed when no longer need. Icedog (talk) 00:15, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Just for illustrative purposes, and the image can't be replaceable, as the console isn't out yet. ZappaOMati 23:08, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This is obviously an image released by the company. I searched for it and find it used in many news articles, such as Forbes Magazine. [1] Its probably listed on Microsoft's website somewhere, although I don't spot it right away. Need to credit it to its proper original source, not just what random site it was found on. Dream Focus 14:22, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep As per rationale of all other users. (And I've credited the proper original source, and reuploaded a properly resized image for fair use purposes). -Kai445 (talk) 17:54, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete E3 is in a few weeks, where a free image is pretty much possible since MS has affirmed it will be demonstrating the unit more and E3 is open to photography. As there is no discussion of the look of the console at the present time (Read: there is no connection to the text and ergo fails NFCC#8), there's no push to get an image in place, per DEADLINE. It would be different if this was a press image and the console was more than months out from a public reveal, but this is clearly going to be available soon so the non-free is inappropriate. --MASEM (t) 00:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - Even when not release, the fact that we are waiting for release is not an adequate reason to keep this image. Impatience is getting out of hand. --George Ho (talk) 19:35, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This image will be useful even after E3. It's in fair use right now anyways. It's an upcoming and hyped console, the image should stay. RocketLauncher2 (talk) 12:03, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also I don't get why we have the clause that explicitly states use if no free alternative exists if we keep doing this. Its such a shame that this is the first thing you see when you look up "Xbox One" and is where many people will get ther information from and yet no one cares if they can put a picture to the name or not. They have to go elsewhere to do it. RocketLauncher2 (talk) 13:52, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
File:Zalgiris-CSKA.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Pofka (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Nonfree image used for decorative purposes, rationale for use unclear. There are already many free images illustrating this basketball club. (ESkog)(Talk) 14:22, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep There is no images illustrating Žalgiris during soviet times. (Pofka)
  • Keep Its used in an article about the subject. Fair usage laws and common sense apply. Dream Focus 01:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • So even if we have six free images on an article, that justifies inclusion of a seventh non-free image which serves the same purpose? That seems to fly in the face of WP:NFCC 3a. (ESkog)(Talk) 12:44, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • ESkog, it seems all you can do is mess up somebody's else work instead of doing something useful by your self. The photos are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and there may be thousands of them describing each of the subject in question, since photo of it cannot be made at the moment. End of story. (Pofka)
  • Delete per WP:NFCC #8. We don't need a non-free image to understand that the team played in Soviet times, so the abscence of this image would not be detrimental to understanding of the article. INeverCry 17:09, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
File:Flag of the New Zealand Ministry of Transport 1968-1998.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Expatkiwi (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

A historical flag which is not used in the infobox and doesn't particularly seem to identify the NZ Ministry of Transport. There's no cited discussion in the article about this image, so it doesn't pass the NFCC (specifically 3a and 8). (ESkog)(Talk) 19:54, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think you're over-reacting. The flag existed and this rendition is accurate.--Expatkiwi(talk) 20:02, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose the flag is accurate and official, though no longer in use. We have many such flags that are non-free without infobox or direct discussion criteria. Fry1989 eh? 20:14, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:OTHERTHINGSEXIST. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:28, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Nobody Knows.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Tweny13 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

No explanation as to why the article needs four non-free images when zero would give the same understanding. See WP:NFG. Stefan2 (talk) 20:40, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:STMatterofHonor.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Cyberia23 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Invalid FUR: Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. This image is not critical for understanding, but is used in a decorative fashion. Since this file does not greatly enhance understanding, nor will its omission greatly decrease understanding, it must be deleted. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:28, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep and hold action on all of these images pending a wider community discussion. I respect your good faith in submitting this batch of deletion nominations, but IMO the issue needs to be reviewed by the community before any of the images in question are deleted. This comment applies as well to the deletions you proposed later (2013 May 23), and I have placed a similar note there. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 04:57, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per Richwales. As stated by others below, these images are illustrative of the episodes and increase understanding, so their use seems appropriate. Such images are so widely used in episode articles that the wider community seems to support their use, so wider community discussion as proposed by Richwales seems necessary. --AussieLegend () 15:45, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete: Clear failure of WP:NFCC#8. None of the keep arguments indicate what significant increase in understanding this image generates or what detrimental effects would occur from its omission.—Kww(talk) 21:52, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, obvious case, as per multiple precedents. Typical example of an image that was evidently uploaded merely as a matter of routine, without any claim to individual explanative significance. Random shot of simply one of the standard characters in an entirely stereotypical pose. Entirely non-specific boilerplate FUR (this makes the image a speedy deletion candidate independently of the outcome of this FFD). Article consists almost entirely of plot renarration and contains no analytical commentary in any way related to the image. Fut.Perf. 05:52, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know what the right answer is for how to nominate these, but having hundreds of separate "discussions" (really just copy/paste replies) is not it. If there is an individual image somewhere in this mess that is important because it does show something critical to the reader's understanding, you may want to say so beyond just copying/pasting a statement. --B (talk) 12:10, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • There was once a mass nomination at WP:NFCR about all episodes from one season, with the result that all of them were deleted. I'm not sure whether this or that is the ideal situation. Any reason to keep any individual image would obviously depend on individual things in the articles, and then a mass nomination is inappropriate. On the other hand, individual discussions typically turn out to be a lot of copying and pasting of identical comments to multiple sections on the same page, and that also seems to be inappropriate. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:26, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • I know and I fully recognize that it's a darned if you do and darned if you don't. But there's just no way that something like this is going to result in individual discussions being evaluated by a closing admin. I picked a few at random and looked at them just to see if any of them were being used for purposes other than decoration and the ones I looked at all seem to be just infobox images used decoratively with no commentary about the image. Those need to go away ... but if there are any that are being used transformatively, they need to be pointed out so that they don't get thrown out with the bathwater. --B (talk) 15:18, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
        • Also, it should be noted that I found two of them that are used in other articles. Whoever handles these needs to take care no to just go right down the list and hit the delete button without checking to see if an image is used in an episode other than the episode article. Romulan and Redshirt (character) both use images under a claim of fair use and both of these are appropriate, or, at least, worthy of a separate discussion. --B (talk) 15:33, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Just a man sitting in a sofa. Easily replaceable by text. Additionally, the image violates WP:NFCC#10b. Straightforward enforcement of the usage instructions for {{Infobox episode}}: "There is no blanket allowance for an image per episode. A non-free screenshot should only be used if it meets the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, i.e. typically if it is required to illustrate a crucial element of the episode that is the object of explicit, sourced analytical commentary and where that commentary is in need of visual support to be understood." --Stefan2 (talk) 12:21, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • Well, I think the point of it is to illustrate the overly complex apology ritual of the Kreetassans that Captain Archer has to follow. It is mentioned in the text, "Finally swallowing his pride, the captain then goes down to the Kreetassan capital city and delivers an intricate ritual apology which involves slicing a tree trunk with a chainsaw, arranging the pieces of wood in a complex pattern on the ground, and chanting phrases in the Kreetassan language." I agree, though, that the picture isn't necessary to the reader's understanding - the text fully explains it. --B (talk) 15:24, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A non-free screenshot should only be used if it meets the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, i.e. typically if it is required to illustrate a crucial element of the episode that is the object of explicit, sourced analytical commentary and where that commentary is in need of visual support to be understood." --Stefan2 (talk) 12:03, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

—Justin (koavf)TCM 23:58, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep per Richwales (see File:STMatterofHonor.jpg. As stated by others below, these images are illustrative of the episodes and increase understanding, so their use seems appropriate. Such images are so widely used in episode articles that the wider community seems to support their use, so wider community discussion as proposed by Richwales seems necessary. --AussieLegend () 15:49, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep You understand the episode more seeing the image from it. Mass duplicate nominations got mass duplicate responses. Dream Focus 01:22, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: Clear failure of WP:NFCC#8. None of the keep arguments indicate what significant increase in understanding this image generates or what detrimental effects would occur from its omission.—Kww(talk) 21:58, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete The fact that a man was sitting in a sofa with two purple men in front of him can easily be described in text instead. See WP:NFCC#1. Also, the fair use rationale doesn't identify which article it refers to, which is a violation of WP:NFCC#10c. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep It shows Spock under the influence of the pon farr Vulcan mating urge...as one can see the fury in his eyes. The nominator should stop the mass nomination of all these images. --Leoboudv (talk) 01:43, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
