Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 50,149. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Its county seat is Clinton, Iowa6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,839 km² (710 mi²). 1,800 km² (695 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.14% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 50,149 people, 20,105 households, and 13,671 families residing in the county. The population density was 28/km² (72/mi²). There were 21,585 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.87% White, 1.89% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 20,105 households out of which 31.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.60% were married couples living together, 9.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% were non-families. 27.40% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $37,423, and the median income for a family was $46,450. Males had a median income of $35,049 versus $21,333 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,724. 10.20% of the population and 7.70% of families were below the poverty line. 13.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.80% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
