Bobien rose to fame on the domestic and international house music scene with her 1999 hit, "You Don't Know" (1999). "You Don't Know" remained on the DJ Play list for weeks.
Established as one of the signature voices in gospel house music over the last two decades, Bobien’s anointed stylized vocals have made her stand out among the host of so many.
“Gospel music is a part of me and that will never change,” says Bobien. “No matter what kind of music I do - gospel is in my heart and soul and manifests itself in everything that I sing.”
Early years
Born and raised in Newark, Suzette Montgomery was born blind to Bishop James and the late Betty Montgomery. She spent all of her childhood in church. While in the womb, Mother Blanch Bell anointed her, prophesying that the child would, one day touch the world and bring many to Christ. On November 4, the child had no vision. With prayer and over 14 surgeries, Bobien credits the grace and mercy of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing her to rise above everything that came with her disability. Soon after her sight was restored as an infant, family and friends began to take notice in her singing abilities. Her voice was bigger and mature than most adult singers.
By the time Bobien was 10 years old, her mother/manager organized and booked her quartet-style singing group, and called them "Su Su and the Chariots." She would often run into her childhood friend, Faith Evans, as they both would often travel around Newark, New Jersey singing at local churches on Bergen Street.
Career
1986-1994
In 1986, Bobien experienced her first large crowd at the Showtime at the Apollo. She took first place for amateur night and became a returning champion. She began winning other state-wide contests, acting in plays and was featured on quartet events around the city and churches. At the age of 17, Bobien was discovered by SAVOY Records recording artist, The late Bishop Jeff Banks and Savoy Records President, Reverend Milton Biggham (The Preacher's Wife), along with the Revival Temple Mass Choir she recorded "The Search Is Over" and "God Can." she quickly became a sought after local talent. She also recorded "I've Been Born Again," and other lead songs with Alvin Darling (The Preacher's Wife) of Newark and New Jersey.
1994-2002
Bobien traveled internationally with popular European gospel tours like Queen Esther Marrow and the Harlem Gospel Singers. Both were some of the United States's most prominent gospel tours. Making stops in Australia, New Zealand, China, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia and Morocco. In 1993, Bobien's younger brother, "Jim Jim," was killed in a motorcycle accident in Newark, and Mother passed in November 1994 and soon after her marriage ended, Bobien slumped into a state of depression. With the help of her business partner and friend, Dewey Cioffi helped her to bounce back strong with a powerhouse anthem, “Set Free” – now deemed a gospel classic penned by producer, Dewey Cioffi of DivaDownEnt. Bobien worked with local New Jersey producer Malik Pendelton to record studio background vocals for Mary J Blige's "Seven Days" in 1998.
Club/House music
Bobien wanted only to sing positive and uplifting music. She refused to record any other music until she was introduced to the world of house music by her ex-husband, Kenny Bobien. While singing backup with Kenny Bobien, would join him on various tracks and Bobien appreciated the freedom of bringing her faith to music on the dance floor. Hooking up with B.O.P. and CeCe Rogers began her initiation into the club world with tracks written by these producers entitled: “Another Story,” “He’ll Be There,” “You Don’t Know” (claiming the number one spot on the UK Charts for several weeks), “Thank You,” and “All Though Me” – which led her to instant gospel music fame and tour. "You Don't Know," a DJ mix by Junior Vasquez and Mark Pichiotti, was first released in 1998. House music has allowed Bobien to minister in ways she had never thought was possible. Currently, she has an international fan base throughout Germany, Italy, and The UK. "You Don't Know" as remixed by Mass Syndicate in 1999, reached #21 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart.[1]
