A cell phone virus is a computer virus that infects a cell phone. Initially considered to be a hoax, cell phone viruses have become real as many smartphones and other modern cell phones feature internet capability and contain storage space.[1]

Cell phone viruses can be harmful because they can steal personal information entered by the user that is useful in identity theft, make expensive calls using the victim's account, or run down the battery quickly.[2][3]

History

The first known mobile virus identified in June 2000 when antivirus labs in Russia and Finland have identified the "Timofonica" worm, which originated in Spain and sends SMS-messages (saying in Spanish "Information for you: Telefonica is fooling you") to GSM mobile phones through Internet SMS-gate of the MoviStart mobile operator.[4]

a known virus occurred in 2004. It was known as "Cabir." It only affected bluetooth phones, and spread between phones via bluetooth.[5][6]

Cell phone viruses were initially demonstrated by Brazilian software engineer Marcos Valesco. He created a virus that could be used by anyone in order to educate the public of the threat.[7]
