Ram Charan (born 27 March 1985) is an Indian film actor, entrepreneur, and an accomplished equestrian.[1] He won two Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards, two Filmfare Awards, two CineMAA Awards, and one Santosham Best Actor Award. In 2011 he was awarded Youth Icon Award by North American Telugu Society (NATS).[2] In addition to the films, he also endoresed brands like Pepsi and Airtel for some period.[3][4] Currently he is the brand ambassador for Tata DoCoMo for Andhra Pradesh region.[5] He owns a Polo Team 'Ram Charan Hyderabad Polo Riding Club (RC HPRC)'.[6] He also serves on the board of directors of MAA TV.[7]

Early life

Ram Charan was born in Madras (Chennai) on 27 March 1985 to acclaimed South Indian actor Chiranjeevi and Surekha. He has two sisters Sushmita, Sreeja. Apart from being a popular actor, he is also an avid equestrian.

Career

In 2007, Ram Charan made his film debut as the leading man in the film Chirutha, which was directed by Puri Jagannadh. His performance in the film earned him a Filmfare Best South Debutant Award and Nandi Special Jury Award.[8] After the release of the 2009 blockbuster Magadheera which was only his second film, Charan established himself as one of the leading contemporary actors of Tollywood. Directed by S. S. Rajamouli,[9] the film received six Filmfare Awards including the award for Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu and Nandi Special Jury Award for Charan.[10] After the success of Magadheera, Charan starred in Bommarillu Bhaskar's Orange in 2010. Though the movie failed at the box-office, his performance and musical score by Harris Jayaraj were applauded. His next, Rachcha released in 2012 took a grand opening and was declared a commercial success.[11] His first release in 2013 was Naayak directed by V. V. Vinayak. It opened to positive critical acclaim and became a huge success.[12] Most of his films have been dubbed in other regional languages like Tamil and Malayalam and achieved success there too, contributing to Charan's popularity in the neighbouring states.

As of now, Charan is working on one Telugu movie Yevadu directed by Vamsi Paidipally. He is set to make his Bollywood debut through Zanjeer (2013 film) in telugu named as Toofan,[13] a remake of the film of same name starring Amitabh Bachchan.

Personal life

Charan got married to Upasana Kamineni, the vice-chairman of Apollo Charity and chief editor of B Positive magazine. The engagement took place in Hyderabad on 1 December 2011. Upasana is the granddaughter of Prathap C. Reddy, the Executive Chairman of the Apollo Hospitals.[14] Subsequently, Ram Charan married Upasana Kamineni on 14 June 2012 at the Temple Trees Farm House.[15].

Ram Charan is the son of Chiranjeevi; grandson to Allu Rama Lingaiah; nephew to Nagendra Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Renu Desai, and Allu Aravind; and cousin to Allu Arjun, Allu Sirish, and Sai Dharam Teja.

Controversies

Actor Ram Charan was in the midst of a controversy when it was alleged that his security had beaten up two software employees for not giving them a way at a traffic signal. However no case was registered against the actor.[16] These were the words the actor had to say after the incident. "I gestured to them to move as it was getting irritable. Instead they chose to be rude which upset me," he said."Their rude response to me and my wife prompted me to ask my security to deal with them. They were in an excited state, barefoot, and looked slightly haggard," he said."If I were to behave that way, maybe I would have myself got into the ruckus rather than asking my security to deal with it," he said.[17]
