Al Lith

Al Lith (Template:Lang-ar) is a city in the Tihamah region on the coast of the Red Sea. Its population is the fifth largest in Makkah Province, and it is one of the large sea ports of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea. It is located at around 20°9′0″N 40°16′0″E. Its nickname is the Pearl of the Red Sea.

Geography

It extends to Hejaz mountains and Adham and Taif provinces to the east and extends as far south as the province Al Qunfudah and passes by international coastal road Jeddah - Jizan. It is located 180 km to the south from the holy city of Mecca , and 190 km away from Jeddah. Its northern villages are just 90 km away from Mecca. The estimated area of ​​the province is about 25 thousand km 2 and a population of over 72,000 people divided between urban and coastal villages and abandonment. 

History

The city got its name from the Valley of Leith, which is located at the east of it near Ghumayqah village. Al lith today is a commercial port that receives pilgrims from all corners of the world. In the past, it used to be a large commercial port that receives goods from Jizan, Yemen, and the coast of Africa and export it to Mecca and Jeddah by sailing ships.
