Jane Cameron is an English actress, known for her role as Sophie Wright in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale or in the BBC children's show M.I.High as Ms. Templeman.[1] In 2011 and 2012, Cameron appeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders as Sophie for three episodes.[2][3][4]

Early and personal life

Cameron currently resides in London, and was born in Yorkshire.[1] She is highly skilled in many dances, as well as horse-riding and fencing.[1] In 1998, Cameron, her mother, and her stepfather were involved in a car accident.[5] Her stepfather Steven Wood was driving the car with Jane and her mother inside, when it collided with Melanie Powell, 20, a friend of Jane's younger brother.[5] The two cars crashed into a field near Menwith Hill, Harrogate, North Yorkshire at an unlit junction.[5] All passengers inside with Jane survived, suffering minor bruises, but Melanie died.[5] A source said, "Jane is distraught over the whole thing. You can imagine the sense of shock when she realised where the dead girl came from, and was known to her family. It was amazing that they managed to walk away but Jane was terribly upset and shaken. She was taken to hospital with a nasty bump to the head, an injured neck and whiplash. It is the mental scars that will need time to heal".[5] Melanie, who worked in Bradford, was driving home to see her boyfriend, and was described as the "best girl ever, fun-loving with lots of friends".[5]

Career

"In ways, it's nice to have a baby on screen. When he's supposed to be crying, often he'll be as happy as anything. And when he's supposed to be happy, he can be a bit grizzly. We have to wait for the crying".[6]

Throughout 1996 to 1997, Cameron appeared as nanny Sophie Wright in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale.[6] Cameron got the role after a year out of drama school, "being thrust into a gruelling schedule in Emmerdale".[6] She was initially auditioning for another part at Yorkshire Television, but got the Emmerdale role instead.[6] Her father, David McDermott, was once a set designer on the show and was introduced as the nanny to James Tate.[6] Cameron said that when her and her parents moved to America for six months when she was 16, she worked as nanny, calling it a "great experience".[6] She said, "Until you've spent every day with a baby, you don't know what it's like. In one of the first scenes, which I read in the audition, someone said, 'Doesn't it make you want to have one of your own?' My character replied, 'No, absolutely not', it's a 24-hour-a-day job".[6] Cameron spoke to a number of parents so she was prepared for the role of Sophie, wanting to be "professional", something which Cameron described Sophie as.[6]
