The Electric Lady is the upcoming second studio album by American recording artist Janelle Monáe, scheduled to be released on September 10, 2013, by Wondaland Arts Society and Bad Boy Records. It is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut studio album, The ArchAndroid. This album serves as the fourth and fifth installments of her seven-part Metropolis concept series.
Background
Monáe first debuted tracks from The Electric Lady at the 2012 Toronto Jazz Festival.
The Electric Lady was made available for pre-order through the iTunes Store on July 2, 2013, with "Dance Apocalyptic" as a pre-order bonus. The album will feature nineteen tracks, although only "Dance Apocalyptic" and previously released single "Q.U.E.E.N." were revealed.[9] There are two editions of the album: a standard edition and a deluxe edition sold exclusively at Target retailers.[10]
Writing and lyrical themes
Thematically, The Electric Lady will continue the utopian cyborg concepts of its predecessors, while presenting itself in more plainspoken, personal territory in addition to experimenting with genres beyond conventional funk and soul music genres such as jazz, pop punk and gospel, as well as woozy and sensual vocal ballads. The album features guest appearances by Prince, Erykah Badu, Solange, Miguel and Esperanza Spalding[11] with production from previous collaborator Deep Cotton (a funk act) and Roman GianArthur (a soul music composer).[12] On July 30, 2013, Monáe announced on Twitter that The Electric Lady would be the fourth and fifth suites of her Metropolis concept series.[13]
Reception
Critical Response
The Electric Lady has received universal acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, so far the album has received an average score of 85, based on 16 reviews.[14]
