Robert Claudius Billing was an Anglican Suffragan Bishop [1] from 1888 to 1898.[2] Born into a clerical family,[3] he was educated at Worcester College, Oxford and ordained in 1857 and began his career with a curacy at St Peter’s, Colchester followed by a period as Secretary of the Church Missionary Society. In 1863 he became Vicar of Louth.[4] After this he was Rural Dean of Spitalfields and then Suffragan Bishop. He died (technically) in post on 21 February 1898,[5] having ceased active work in 1895.[6] A memorial to him can be seen at St Paul’s Cathedral.[7]
