On November 1, 2013, a fatal shooting occurred at around 9:20 a.m. PDT in Terminal 3 of the Los Angeles International Airport. The gunman, allegedly 23-year-old Paul Anthony Ciancia, opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, killing a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer and wounding several other people.
Shooting
A gunman entered Terminal 3 of the airport, pulled a semi-automatic rifle out of a bag, and began firing at civilians and TSA officers. He then moved into the TSA screening area and continued shooting. He passed the checkpoint area and moved farther into the terminal. One witness said on CNN that the gunman was walking, not running down the terminal. He made it as far as the end of the terminal in the food court. Law enforcement officers tracked down the suspect and engaged him in a gun fight, which injured him and led to his capture. He was then transported via ambulance to a nearby trauma hospital, where he is expected to recover and be released into police custody by the end of November 2.[1]
The gunman had a note stating that he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs."[2]
Victims
Fatality
TSA officer Gerardo I. Hernandez, age 39, was shot at the airport and was pronounced dead after he arrived at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.[3][4] It was confirmed Hernandez was transferred from an airport in Montana days earlier.[5] He is the first TSA officer in the history of the agency to be killed while on duty.[6][7]
Injuries
Seven victims, including another TSA officer, were treated at the scene. Six victims were transported to area hospitals, including three men, two suffering gunshot wounds, who were treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Some of the injuries were not from gunshots.[8]
Suspect
The sole suspect is Paul Anthony Ciancia, age 23,[9] who lives in a Los Angeles apartment and grew up in Pennsville, New Jersey.[10] He graduated from Salesianum School in 2008.[11]
Ciancia's brother said he received a text message from him earlier in the day saying he was thinking about taking his life. A video from KCAL-TV shows Ciancia going from the ambulance to the hospital with multiple police officers while handcuffed to a gurney.[12][13] Ciancia was shot in the chest multiple times.[14]
Initial reaction
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) evacuated several terminals and searched for any other possible suspects. They searched in cars with armed officers and a bomb-sniffing dog at the nearby parking garages that are connected to the airport by pedestrian bridges. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all outbound flights at the airport. Runways 24L and 24R were shut down. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 were shut down and the passengers were evacuated from these terminals to the Tom Bradley International Terminal for questioning. Hundreds of people were re-screened as they exited the international terminal.[15] Airlines diverted some flights to other airports in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Most were directed to Ontario International Airport, others to Long Beach Airport. Most of the diverted flights were originally scheduled to taxi to gates at Terminal 1, 2, and 3.[16][17]
Aftermath
At around 2:00 p.m. PDT, Terminals 1 and 2 were reopened for regular operations. Subsequently, runways 24L and 24R were re-opened for arriving and departing flights. [citation needed] At 5:53 p.m. PDT, vehicle traffic was open to the passenger pickup/arrival on the lower level of the airport.[citation needed] The passenger drop off/departure route on the upper level is still closed for crime scene investigation and will remain closed until further notice.[citation needed]
