Today water level fluctuates from overflow to at least 8 metres below overflow. While this is occurring the volume of the overflow from Frying Plan Lake varies. This variation is the inverse of the lake level in Inferno Crater. Inferno Crater Lake is a large hot spring located in the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley.[1] Today Inferno Crater Lake and it neighbor Frying Pan Lake show interrelated cyclic hydrology variations in a 38 day cycle. Comparable cyclic activity is unknown in other hydrothermal systems in the world.

Since 1901 the lakelet occupying Inferno Crater has exhibited water level variations closely associated with the Waimangu Geyser cycle. Today water level fluctuates from overflow to at least 8 metres below overflow. While this is occurring the volume of the overflow from Frying Plan Lake varies. This variation is the inverse of the lake level in Inferno Crater. That is, as Inferno Crater Lake water levels falls the overflow of Frying Plan lake increases, and when the water level in Inferno Crater rises the overflow from Frying Pan decreases.[1] [2]
