History

The Grand Prior Award was established as St John's Principal and Senior Cadet Award in 1931 by the Grand Prior of the time, the Duke of Connaught. The Grand Prior took an intimate interest in the award and even helped to develop the initial program criteria.

The First Grand Prior awards were presented on the 17th of February, 1933, to two ambulance cadets in England and a nursing cadet in Australia.

The Award has now been given a new prominence by the international governing body of the Order, the Grand Council.

The Grand Council has issued an Instruction concerning the award. The Instruction restates that the Grand Prior Award is the highest award, other than for bravery, which the Order can confer on a Cadet.

Because the Grand Prior Award is an Order award, it is sealed with the Priory Seal.
