Development
In October 2006, the film was reported to be in planning with Karthi, whose first film was yet to release at the time, and Sandhya being signed on.[6] The film titled Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam consequently began its shoot in November 2006 and was produced by R. Ravindran and White Elephants, Selvaraghavan's new production house in collaboration with cinematographer Arvind Krishna and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja.[7][8] However after a brief filming schedule, the film failed to progress.[9]
The film was relaunched on 7 November 2008 and filming started with a new cast of Dhanush and Andrea Jeremiah in the leading roles. Ramji and G. V. Prakash Kumar had taken over as the cinematographer and music director respectively.[10] The film was described to be a quick project with Selvaraghavan and Dhanush's sister, Vimalageetha taking up the production reins.[11] However, filming was stalled for unknown reasons.[12]
In August 2009, the film was launched again for the third time with a first schedule planned in Hyderabad.[13][14][15] However the film was yet again abandoned in October 2009.[16]
The film began shoots for the fourth time on 27 June 2010 with the same cast, but a changed title of Maravan. Filming was held at Jeppiaar Engineering College in Chennai.[17][18] The title later was changed to Irandaam Ulagam and in a turn of events, Yuvan Shankar Raja replaced Prakash Kumar as music composer.[19][20][21][22] However, in a sensational turn, Prakash Kumar was assigned again as composer after Yuvan Shankar Raja moved out of the project.[23] The film ran into trouble yet again after lead actress Andrea Jeremiah pulled out of the film.[24][25][26][27]
Since films in other languages are typically dubbed in Telugu, Selvaraghavan, in September 2011, had opted to make the film as a bilingual in Tamil and Telugu. He roped in Arya and Anushka Shetty to play the lead roles in the film.[28][29] Meanwhile, Harris Jayaraj was confirmed to be a part of the project as the music director, again replacing Prakash Kumar.[30]
Filming
"No one has really attempted a mystical film. There is a lot of Sufism and a Zen feel to the film. I have made a romantic film that uses these elements in the background. There is a reality in mysticism"
The film shooting took off on 24 December 2011, in Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad.[32][33] The next schedule was filmed in Goa, inside the BITS-Pilani, Goa Campus, following which the team shot few scenes in Rio de Janeiro and the forests of Brazil.[34][35] It was reported that Arya and Anushka will play double roles.[36] Selvaraghavan reported that the film will have CGI scenes.[37] Some portions were shot in Hyderabad.[38] Arya worked out to build a huge frame and six-pack abs to fit the muscular lead role.[39] The team returned from Georgia after almost two months of continuous shoot under extreme conditions.[40] Chinmayi dubbed in Tamil for Anushka. The unit after shooting at Ramoji Film City moved to the holy town of Srisailam situated in Nallamala Hills of Kurnool district. Scenes crucial for the story were shot in this last and final schedule.[41] The talkie portions of the project were completed by April 2013.[42]
In October 2013, all post-production work including computer generated imagery which took weeks was finally over and the content was locked.[43]

Irandaam Ulagam marks Harris Jayaraj's first collaboration with director Selvaraghavan. For the seven songs, he teamed up with poet Vairamuthu for the soundtrack. The songs feature breezy romantic and situation based tracks as per the film's central theme.[44][45] The song En Kaadhal Thee sung by S. P. Balasubramaniam was recorded in late October 2012.[46]
A single track sung by Dhanush, "Pazhangkalla" was released on 2 August, aired on Suryan F.M. The full album was released on 4 August,[47] and received overwhelming positive reviews from critics[48][49] The album was mastered and made available for iTunes on 13 August and within a week of its release, topped the iTunes India Charts.[50] Anirudh Ravichandar was signed to compose the film's background music, in Budapest, instead of Harris Jayaraj, after the latter left the project due to other commitments.[51]

The official high-definition theatrical trailer published on YouTube attracted 1.2 million views[52] A week after its release, the soundtrack topped the iTunes India charts by claiming the No.1 spot.[53] A huge 70-feet cut-out of Anushka was erected at Shilpa Kala Vedika in Madhapur on the eve of audio launch.[54] The launch event was streamed live on YouTube, MAA Movies, Vanitha TV and NTV.
Release
The animation technicians who worked for the blockbuster movie “Avatar” have been roped in for the visual effects of this romantic drama film. This, at the side of many different aspects of the production, has apparently led to a magniloquent budget is ₹ 60 crores.[55] The film was initially announced to release in Diwali 2013, but was later postponed to November 22 along with its dubbed versions Telugu (as Varna), Hindi, Georgian, Russian, Uzbek, and Turkish, placing it among the highly anticipated films of the year.[56]"Irandam Ulagam" (Second World) has received a clean "U" certificate with no cuts from the censor board and the film runs for 2 hours 40 minutes and 9 seconds[57].The censor board members are reportedly in awe after watching the final product of the film which is directed by Selvaraghavan.[58][59] According to reports the film's producers, PVP Cinema, will release the fantasy thriller in more than 1,200 screens worldwide which is biggest release ever in Arya's career. Apart from India, "Irandam Ulagam" will release in overseas markets including US, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland and France[60]
The advance bookings for the film, which started on Wednesday (20 November), has received good response. Bookings were high in Chennai city, particularly in multiplexes, said entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai . As there was a good pre-talk for the Tamil movie, multiplexes in the city decided to open the counters to sell tickets of the movie two days before its release. The bookings had a slow start, and till the afternoon, the response was not high. But post noon, tickets started selling like hot cakes. According to reports, the multiplexes have sold over 15,000 tickets for the first weekend.[61]
Critical Reception
The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics.
Behindwoods rated it 3 out of 5 and stated "If you do not question the concept and enjoy the fantasy you will like Irandam Ulagam". Oneindia gave 2.5 out of 5 stated "Full marks to the technical brilliance of Irandam Ulagam. But the decision to watch Irandam Ulagam lies between whether you love watching abstruse movies or purely entertainment flick. If you love to see the former, don't miss it".[62] Sify wrote, "Irandam Ulagam is not everybody’s cup of tea, but film is made with a lot of passion and sincerity. However, like all his previous films, this one too is ahead of its time".[63] Rediff gave 3 out of 5 and wrote, "Irandam Ulagam is a visually stunning fantasy story set in an imaginary world that describes a love that transcends human understanding of time and space. (It) is an ambitious project by a director who always strives to give a different and unique experience to his audience".[64] India Glitz rated 2.75/5 stated "'Irandam Ulagam' is a complete experience. It doesn't have the usual high amounts of action, romance, comedy and masala as a normal Kollywood film would have; though it has all of it, everything is in moderation. A love story beyond one this world, the film is not a thoroughbred strictly Indian flavour, but is meant for the world audience at large. Savouring tastes of global interests, the film is a fair choice of being a multilingual international movie. In all 'Irandam Ulagam' is for the wise audience".[65]
Varna received mostly negative reviews.[66]
123Telugu rated the film 1.5 out of 5 and stated "A good production house with deep pockets was taken for a ride by the director with a farcical script and atrocious screenplay. Films like ‘Varna’ are a rarity. They fall into the ‘never before, never again’ category. Film school students must be forced to watch this film. Perhaps, Christopher Nolan can also take a look as this film has a lot more ‘depth’ compared to ‘Inception’".[67] AP Herald gave 0.5 out of 5 and stated "The film has a little bit of everything from the serious philosophical questions to some funny action episodes - feeless romance and a dash of gore. For all those who are used to watching mythical wonders that leave you spellbound, Varna could end up as a joke, at best. It is amateurish to the core, predictable and its making lacks any kind of imagination".[68] Great Andhra rated it 0.5/5 and stated "The interval break leaves the audience in utter confusion. Things were expected to improve in the second half but unfortunately it got worse and the climax did the wrap up job of ensuring every viewer has enough bumps on the head with blank thoughts. There is no clue what the producers saw in the story, no idea why Anushka saw potential. All in all, this is one mess of a product but a good lesson to filmmakers on how not to make a film".[69]
