In 2002, the school district settled a federal lawsuit, ''[[Henkle v. Gregory]]'', out of court by agreeing to pay $451,000 to Derek Henkle, a high school student who charged that school officials had allowed him to be verbally and physically harassed on account of his [[sexual orientation]]. The district admitted no wrongdoing, but agreed to institute a series of programs to protect students' rights to free expression and to attend school in a non-hostile environment. Henkle's attorneys called it "the largest pre-trial award of its kind in history".<ref name=latimes>{{cite news| last=Reich| first=Kenneth| title=Nevada School District Settles Gay Harassment Suit| url=http://articles.latimes.com/2002/aug/28/nation/na-rights28| accessdate=6 September 2012| newspaper=Los Angeles Times| date=28 August 2002}}</ref> |

In 2009, the Washoe County School District agreed to pay $350,000 to Jana Elhifny, an Egyptian-American female student who claimed she had been harassed for being a Muslim and wearing a headscarf. It also paid $50,000 to a non-Muslim female student who was ostracized by other students after she befriended Elhifny. The district praised its personnel for their "professional and thorough handling of [Elhifny's] educational and personal issues". Her attorney disagreed and said: "I don't believe a district pays $400,000 if it believes it has no exposure."<ref>{{cite news| last=Chereb| first=Sandra| title=Nev. The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is a public school district providing public education to students in Washoe County, Nevada, including the cities of Reno and Sparks, and the unincorporated communities of Verdi, Incline Village, and Gerlach. The Washoe County School District is the second largest school district in Nevada with approximately 63,000 students enrolled in 93 schools.
A board of seven elected trustees governs the Washoe county School District. The 2012 president of the WCSD Board of Trustees is Ken Grein. The 2012 Vice President of the WCSD Board of Trustees is John Mayer, and the 2012 Clerk of the Board of Trustees is Estela Gutierrez. The trustees appoint a superintendent to lead the district in day-to-day operations.

Prior to his service in the field of education, Mr. Martinez served as a director of finance and technology at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and as an audit manager at both Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers.[1] Mr. Martinez is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) after completing an Accounting degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and has an MBA from DePaul University.[1]

2013 Sparks Middle School shooting
A student opened fire at Sparks Middle School, a Washoe County School District school. Two students were critically injured, and a teacher was fatally shot while trying to intervene with the student. The gunman then committed suicide by shooting himself. Students from the school were evacuated and were placed at Sparks High School, where they held until they were picked up by their guardians.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
