Revision as of 22:51, 17 December 2013
50 images from the Science Museum collection
The Science Museum in London have agreed to release 50 of it's images (at a medium resolution) under a Wikimedia compatible license. Do you have anything in particular you need that they have? Feel free to give me a list if you like. The 2 websites that the images would be available from are:
- http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/ (has to say only copyright Science Museum in the licensing description)
I'm hoping this is the start of something larger but could just be a one off so am trying to come up with a most wanted list. Please leave your suggestions below (linking to specific pages) --Mrjohncummings (talk) 23:44, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

Just checking out the idea (playing around) but on the odd chance these might be useful:
- http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10325616
- http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10437889
- All the WWI photos - but I have to say that the copyright limitations on these seem to be "extreme", e.g.
- (http://www.scienceandsociety.co.uk/results.asp?image=10198440 (copyright looks ok)
The 1322 NASA photos are *all* ok regarding copyright, but this may not be the best place to get them. Still, the museum has selected a very beautiful group
The light micrographs are all wonderful, but it looks like they are all properly copyrighted by individuals
Car bodies all look like they fit in with the restrictions we have to deal with, and might be very useful for selected articles, e.g.
Royal Society transactions might be very useful for some articles
All in all there's a wonderful trove here (with some annoying restrictions). Keep up the good work. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:54, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Well you know my subject... :) These would be useful:

- Gibraltarian scouts at Birkenhead Jamboree
- Funeral of Stoker Stout in Gibraltar

FWIW both these images are in the public domain

Museum Guides
Were you aware that it is possible to create maps with links to images and articles eg:
[[1]]
Although I expect the people over at open street maps or even the geohack people on the toolserver could do a better job.Geni (talk) 19:43, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I think it may be hard as the museums are over multiple levels and may get squished on mobile devices (I have an android phone this happens on sometimes) but if you would like to do something I'd be happy to help any way I can, I think these guides will need multiple techniques for different galleries. I tried to use Google Maps to make a multi level map, it works quite well but the GPS signal in the museums is awful. I want to make the guides as understandable as possible by non English language speaks as well. I have been thinking it would be really nice to do image maps for some exhibits if they're quite complex. It's hard to tell from the image but the Giant sequoia has dates for various events, I may do an image map for this or possibly a table.
- If you've got an idea for something and need some photos I'm at the museums nearly every week dat so just let me know, I'm going to try to get museum visitors involved in taking images asap, not quite sure how to make a useable list they can use to know what needs photographing though. Mrjohncummings (talk) 20:01, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
- If we can't get the museum to release a map of their interiors under a free license the people to talk to are open street maps. In terms of photos of stuff on display most of it has already been nabbed. Things like Old Bess (beam engine) are tricky to photograph well.Geni (talk) 21:41, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi John, any chance that we can have a photo of the memorial tablet for Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin for those articles? Thanks. Shyamal (talk) 08:02, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Sinclair, Manitoba may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

3D models
Hi John, I could swear that somewhere you said you'd written a guide to uploading 3D models to Commons. I can't find that on Commons itself. Can you point me to it? I hope I haven't just made this up. TIA, MartinPoulter (talk) 21:25, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- Afraid not, Commons doesn't support it yet unfortunately (soon please). What I made was a guide to creating 3d models for Wikipedia, a bit redundant till the functionality is added, but still useful for some things Wikipedia:3D_guide. Mrjohncummings (talk) 21:32, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. MartinPoulter (talk) 10:55, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oh i did forget though, look at Thingiverse, it's a bit like Flickr for 3d models, a useful place to put them for now, they should get some good and interesting use on there too, they support the full range of CC licenses as far as I'm aware. --Mrjohncummings (talk) 11:08, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Alfred J. Clements
As you may recall, you kindly took a photo of Alfred J. Clements' memorial at Conway Hall yesterday. His notability is being challenged, so perhaps uploading it and adding it to the article will soothe the naysayers. Edwardx (talk) 21:58, 28 November 2013 (UTC)
