Ram Charan was born to South Indian actor Chiranjeevi and Surekha. He has two sisters Sushmita, Sreeja. Apart from being a popular actor, he is also an avid equestrian.
Career
In 2007, Ram Charan made his film debut as the leading man in the film Chirutha, which was directed by Puri Jagannadh. He played the role of Charan, an ex-convict who is hellbent on killing the murderer of his father. His performance was applauded by critics. idlebrain.com wrote "Ram Charan Teja is simply superb. His debut is undoubtedly one of the best debuts in Telugu film industry. He has got everything right in his first film and with proper career planning only sky is the limit. To sum up in one line, Ram Charan Teja has all the qualities to become the future mega star."[11] Rediff too praised his performance stating "Ram Charan is quite promising. Dance and action appears to be forte. He is rather graceful in the dance numbers. He also stays clear of any oblique reference to his star father by way of dialogue or adopting any particular mannerism or style."[12] His performance in the film earned him a Filmfare Best South Debutant Award and Nandi Special Jury Award.[13] After the release of the 2009 blockbuster Magadheera which was only his second film, Charan established himself as one of the leading contemporary actors of Tollywood. He played a Dual role in this film in which one is a Brave Soldier of a kingdom in Rajasthan in the 17th century who is in love with the princess but however loses her and dies, the other being a bike racer who falls in love with a girl who is the re-incarnation of the princess and wins her knowing their past. His portrayal got immense critical acclaim. The Times of India wrote "Ram Charan Tej returns as a valiant soldier and breathes life into the larger-than-life role with ease. He showcases his horse-riding and dancing skills to perfection."[14] IndiaGlitz commented "Charan has come up with a mature performance and he has carried the film very well. Both his characters were done good justice and he reminded of his father at many places."[15] Directed by S. S. Rajamouli,[16] the film received six Filmfare Awards including the award for Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu and Nandi Special Jury Award for Charan.[17]
After the success of Magadheera, Charan starred in Bommarillu Bhaskar's Orange in 2010. He played the role of Ram, an NRI living in Australia whose opinions are against loving forever. Though the movie failed at the box-office, his performance and musical score by Harris Jayaraj were applauded. IndiaGlitz wrote "Ram Charan gave an excellent performance all through the film. His attire, make up, dressing style, accessories and body language gives the audiences a fresh feel of an urbane guy. He improved a lot in all the departments including action, dances, dialogue modulation, body language."[18] idlebrain.com wrote "Ram Charan Tej should be appreciated for accepting such a honest subject with a thin story line for his third movie. It shows that Charan is not trying to stick to stardom and is not willing to repeat the mistakes performed by stars. The entire films runs on his characterization. He is brilliant in the break-up scenes and I loved his don’t-give-a-damn body language. His dances are full of energy and life."[19] His next film was Rachcha directed by Sampath Nandi. He did the role of Betting Raj, a gambling fetish whose life takes a toll on him after his past comes into the game. His performance was well received. IndiaGlitz wrote "Charan is a treat for his fans. In fact, he is one reason why his fans should watch the film. He shows flashes of Chiru-ness more than he ever did in the past; be it his baritone or demeanour, he is a Megastar in effect. Helped by a strong script, he could have been much better."[20] 123telugu.com wrote "Charan is extremely good in the role of Raj. His dances and fights are impressive as always and he has grown by leaps and bounds as an actor. His diction and tonal modulation are now top notch. He is perfect for the role and has essayed his character with conviction."[21] The film released on 5 April 2012 and took a grand opening and was declared a commercial success.[22]
His first release in 2013 was Naayak directed by V. V. Vinayak. He played yet another Dual role, one a mafia leader in Kolkata and the other a simple software employee in Hyderabad. His work was well received by the critics. The Times of India wrote "Ram Charan did a great job. His voice modulation has improved a lot and his dance moves in the number 'Laila o Laila' and 'Hey Naayak' are matchless. He lives up to the expectations as he glides through his role as effortlessly as he can which makes for an amazing watch."[23] Oneindia Entertainment wrote "Ram Charan Teja has delivered wonderful performance in the movie Naayak. His voice modulation is superb and he has shown lot of ease in dance and action sequences. He is the showman in the movie."[24] It opened to positive critical acclaim and became a huge success.[25] Most of his films have been dubbed in other regional languages like Tamil and Malayalam and achieved success there too, contributing to Charan's popularity in the neighboring states.
Ram Charan made his Bollywood debut through Zanjeer, a remake of the 1973 film of the same name that starred Amitabh Bachchan. The film that featured Priyanka Chopra opposite him, however opened to negative critical reception and was declared a Disaster by Box Office India. Charan made his debut as a playback singer with the song "Mumbai Ke Hero", composed by Chirantan Bhatt, in the album Thoofan, the Telugu version of Zanjeer. As of now, Charan completed working on a Telugu movie titled Yevadu directed by Vamsi Paidipally which is awaiting a theater release.
He ranked 18th in the Times of India list of top 50 desirable men in 2013.[26]
Personal life
Charan got married to Upasana Kamineni, the vice-chairman of Apollo Charity and chief editor of B Positive magazine. The engagement took place in Hyderabad on 1 December 2011. Upasana is the granddaughter of Prathap C. Reddy, the Executive Chairman of the Apollo Hospitals.[27] Subsequently, Ram Charan married Upasana Kamineni on 14 June 2012 at the Temple Trees Farm House.[28]
Ram Charan is the son of Chiranjeevi; grandson to Allu Rama Lingaiah; nephew to Nagendra Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Renu Desai, and Allu Aravind; and cousin to Allu Arjun, Allu Sirish, Varun Tej and Sai Dharam Tej.
