Cold in July is a crime drama where an eye for an eye doesn't always work out. The film is adapted from the cult novel by Joe R. Lansdale. Richard Dane, a regular family man, awakens to the sound of someone breaking into his home. He grabs his gun that he never dreamed he'd use, and comes face to face with an armed intruder. The man raises a weapon and fires and Richard feels the bullet whiz by his head. In an instant Richard raises his weapon and fires striking the intruder in the right eye. A fatal shot. There's blood splatter on the wall behind the now deceased man. Richard's wife Ann calmly asks is the burglar dead. The police are called and the detective knows the man well. Name is Freddy Russell, a long-time crook in and out of various prisons. Problem is Freddy has a father named Ben, also a career criminal, who might not take too kindly that his only son is gunned down. Sure enough Ben Russell starts showing up at Richard's son's school and at his work. Ben is too smart to make any direct threats and the police are unable to make an arrest. One night, even with police protection, Russell makes his way into Richard Dane's home and confronts him with a handgun. However, Ben Russell is unable to pull the trigger. After they talk for a while Ben takes out his only picture of Freddy. Richard takes one look at it and claims "That is not the man I shot". Obviously the police are in on it so Richard and Ben, along with a private investigator named Jim Bob Luke, set out to find Ben's son and figure out who Richard really shot.[1][2]
