Ramban district is a newly formed district in India's northern most state, the Jammu and Kashmir.
Geography
Ramban district is at an elevation of 1,156 metres (3792 feet) above the sea level. The boundary lines of Ramban district have come to be drawn from Patnitop on its south, Assar on its east, Gool on its west and Banihal on its north. The river 'Chenab' also known as 'Chanderbhaga' river passes through the district. National Highway-1A (now 44) that connects Jammu with Srinagar passes through the district.
Administration
Ramban district consists of two tehsils, Ramban and Banihal, and four community development blocks, Ramban, Banihal, Gool and Ramsoo. Each block consists of a number of panchayats. The district consisted of 116 census villages and 127 revenue villages in 2001. The total number of panchayat Halqas in the district is 124.
Ramban town is the district headquarters. The town is located along the Chenab river, on National Highway-44, (origianlly 1A) approximately 150km from Jammu, and about 150km from Srinagar, making it a near-midpoint on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.[1]
Politics
Ramban district has two assembly constituencies: Banihal and Ramban.[2] A hydroelectric project is being constructed by JP Industries at Chanderkote about 8 km from Ramban. The potential of this project is 900mW and it will be completed in two phases of 450mW each.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, Ramban district has a population of 283,313.[3] roughly equal to the nation of Barbados.[4] This gives it a ranking of 573rd in India (out of a total of 640).[3] The district has a population density of 213 inhabitants per square kilometre (550/sq mi) .[3] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 31.81%.[3] Ramban has a sex ratio of 901 females for every 1000 males,[3] and a literacy rate of 56.9%.[3] It is a Pahri speaking majority tehsil banihal 65% are spoken this language which includes the pogli language. The pogli is spoken in the upper reaches of banihal tehsil I.e pongal, neel and khari areas of banihal tehsil the Gool nebiat of tehsil ramban has 65% hindus population and language is also Pahari. Batote nebiat of tehsil ramban has 60% hindus population and the rest of tehsil ramban has 80% hindus population. The another ancient pahari language i.e Rambani is spoken in Ramban Headquarter and its surrounding areas. (information given by Shabir Hussain Shabir poet, writer, critic)
