The Islamic Online University (IOU) is an online, distance-learning university founded by Dr. Bilal Philips. Initially established in 2001, the program shut down due to technical difficulties and was re-opened in 2007, providing an online Da’wah Training Course.[1] The Islamic Online University now offers a free Diploma Course, a Bachelors in Islamic Studies (BAIS), accredited by Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi (UMMI), Indonesia, the Somali Ministry of Higher Education and Gollis University of Somaliland.[2] They also offer a Foundation Diploma (Bridge to MAIS). They intend to offer their first MA in Islamic Studies in 2014, when the first cohort of BA students graduate, followed by a PhD in Islamic Studies.[3]
History
Established by Dr. Bilal Philips in 2001, the program had to shut down due to technical difficulties while the materials developed for its courses were used in the establishment of a department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Preston University, Ajman, United Arab Emirates.[4] Three years later, the first cohort of students graduated with a BA in Islamic Studies (BAIS). One year after running the department at Preston, Dr. Philips moved to Doha, Qatar and, at the beginning of 2007, established another BA in Islamic Studies (BAIS) program under the title of the Islaamic Studies Academy, this time approved and accredited by Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan.[5][6][7][8]
In April 2007, the Islamic Online University (IOU) reopened with a Da’wah Training Course. The server and LMS (Learning Management System) were upgraded, with courses now having audios, flash format videos and PDF-format course texts. Courses also now include a monthly online live student forum with Dr. Philips, as well as an online forum for students to discuss and share research together.[9][10]
Courses
The Islamic Online University currently offers three courses: the Diploma in Islamic Studies, which is not accredited, the BA in Islamic Studies (BAIS), accredited by Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi (UMMI) and Gollis University of Somaliland, and a Higher Diploma (Bridge to MAIS), which is also unaccredited. The Diploma in Islamic Studies can be obtained by completed 24 free online certificate courses, with course materials in the form of flash-videos, audio recordings and PDF course texts. Those who complete each course receive a printable online certificate and, after completing 24 courses, an online diploma certificate.[11]
The BA in Islamic Studies (BAIS) can be taken over a minimum of four years but may also be taken part-time. This course differs from the Diploma in that it follows the admissions requirements of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi (UMMI), meaning that one must have completed a high school education before enrolling. While following the same format as the Diploma course (with flash-videos, PDF texts, etc.) it also includes course work.[12][13]
The Higher Diploma (Bridge to MAIS) is designed for people who have not completed the BAIS and have a degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) in another field but would like to take part in the MA in Islamic Studies (MAIS) when this becomes available in 2014. It consists of 16 of the core courses of the BAIS and can be taken over three semesters (a year and a half) minimum or, if taken part-time, over four years with three courses taken per semester. While this course is not accredited, it is intended to allow participants to take an accredited MA in Islamic Studies.[14]
