Samuel Joseph "Sammie" Szmodics (born 24 September 1995) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Colchester United.

Career

Born in Colchester, Szmodics is a product of the Colchester United academy, having progressed through the club's youth ranks since the age of seven.[2] He made his professional debut for the club during an injury crisis, and having impressed at youth level, manager Joe Dunne drafted him into the first-team squad. He came on as a substitute for Craig Eastmond in a 1–1 draw with Bristol City on 28 September 2013[3] and was then introduced in the 57th minute of the following game as a replacement for Jeffrey Monakana in the 3–0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 5 October.[4]

In January 2014, it was announced that Szmodics had been shortlisted for a Football League award in the 'Apprentice of the Year – League One' category. He faced Preston North End's Josh Brownhill and Milton Keynes Dons' Brendon Galloway for the award.[5]
