Need for Speed: Carbon is the latest installment in Need for Speed series. Although it has yet to be officially announced, it was shown in EA's montage at Sony's 2006 conference. EB Games have anounced a provisional release date of November 1, 2006. The story and features of this game are unknown as of now. It is the first NFS game set to be released for the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. From the previews, Lamborghinis and Porsches are to be featured in the game. It is also evident that night time racing will make a welcome return to the series as some of the cars appear to have neon lights.

Rumors and speculation

It has been suggested by a member of Electronic Arts official forums [1], that The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) provides additional keys to the setting and storyline of Carbon by revealing at least some of the characters in the upcoming game [2]. The character information was posted to the IMDb website on March 31, 2006, before the Carbon name was presented (not announced). However, the IMDb website does not refer to the game as "Need for Speed: Carbon", but instead refers to it as "Need for Speed 7"; it is unclear at this point why the IMDb website refers to the game as such. Need for Speed: Carbon is neither the seventh Need for Speed cataloged by IMDb [3] nor the seventh Need for Speed in the Need for Speed series. An informative thread, although mostly off topic, posted on Electronic Arts official forums [4] contains a secondary discussion of what "number" the next Need for Speed could, informally, be refered to by. NFS Carbon will be the 10th game in the series unless one counts "NFS 2 SE" as a seperate game, then this would be the 11th game released.
