Gwak Dong-yeon (곽동연; born 19 March 1997 in South Korea), is a South Korean actor under FNC Entertainment.[1]

Biography

Gwak Dong-yeon made his show business debut as "Bang Janggoon" in the Korean Family Drama My Husband Got A Family on 25 February 2012. Gwak is currently recognized as the singer trainee of FNC Entertainment (home of Korean idols like F.T. Island, CNBLUE, Juniel, AOA, and N.Flying). [2]

Since 2009, Gwak has been studying bass technology at FNC Academy, together with N.Flying's members, AOA's members, and actor Song Sehyun.[3] At first, he got guitar and bass guitar lesson, but later he also challenged himself to learn about acting. On 8 February 2013 he graduated from Yeongdeungpo Middle School. [4] He is now attending Seoul School of Performing Arts.[5]

Acting Activities

Gwak Dongyeon gained recognition after featuring in the KBS TV series My Husband Got a Family, played as the unique-erratic middle high school boy, "Bang Janggoon". [6] The character got a good feedback from the viewer and leaded Gwak to achieve "Best Child Award" in 2012 6th Korean Drama Festival. In this drama, Gwak also played with his label-mate actor, CNBLUE's Kang Min-hyuk who played as "Cha Segwang", Bang Janggoon's private tutor. The drama itself always ranked #1 and even peaked with 49,6% viewer rating, so Gwak got a big attention for being in the drama.

On April 2013, Gwak acted as Young Prince Dongpyung in SBS historical drama Jang Ok-jung, Living by Love. On the following month, he got another role for KBS Drama Special Adolescence Medley, played as the lead actor "Choi Jeongwoo".[7] The drama has been aired during 10 July-31 July 2013, catching the viewer attention for the nostalgic scenes. Per 6 February 2014, KBS Puberty Medley has the most viewers on KBS World TV Youtube Channel - Drama Special list.[8] From this drama, he got the prize from Korea Communications Standards Commission on 23 September 2013.[9]

On 10 September 2013, his label FNC Entertainment stated that he got another new role for KBS new drama Inspiring Generation. [10] He acted as young Shin Jung Tae (adult played by Kim Hyun-joong). The drama was originally scheduled to air in November 2013, but due to the extensive overseas filming, the series has been postponed to January 2013. [11]Through this drama Gwak got his first chance to go abroad to film drama in China. [12] Appeared in the 4 first episodes as the young Kim Hyun-joong, Gwak got the most attention in internet real time searching. He got noticed by his sharp eyes and his steady acting.[13][14]

Singer Trainee and Guitarist of Kkokkoma Band

Although Gwak Dongyeon has debuted as a young actor, he still has the status as a singer/musician trainee of FNC Entertainment. He showed off his musical ability through singing and playing guitar in My Husband Got A Family drama. He even sang for the drama OST "Ce Song" with Yoo Jun-sang and his on screen father, Kim Sang-ho. On November 2012, he sang a duet song “BABO” with his label-mate singer JUNIEL in the wedding party of FNC’s Director of Entertainment Department, Kim Youngsan.[15] In Adolescence Medley he even did cover of Kim Kwang-seok's "Be Forgotten" and Lee Juck's "Running in The Sky".

Through reality drama tvN Cheongdamdong 111 Gwak's trainee life has been exposed to public. He has known to be in trainee band named Kkokkoma Band (꼬꼬마 벤드]. The band's name means little kids band, consists of four young boys Gwak Dongyeon (lead guitar, born 1997), Oh Heejun (vocal and guitar, born 1996), Lee Hweechan (drum, born 1996), and Seo Dongseong (bass, born 1996). Kkokkoma Band has been formed three months before Cheongdamdong 111 filming. Gwak once got his private guitar lesson from CNBLUE's Lee Jong-hyun. He and Kkokkoma Band as CNBLUE's mentees, won the trainee battle against F.T. Island's mentees. For the battle, they performed "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles, the legendary band that Gwak wants to be like.
