AOA (an acronym for Ace of Angels; Template:Lang-ko) is a South Korean idol girl group and band, produced by FNC Entertainment. These groups are constructed of a band with 5 members (Choa, Jimin, Yuna, Yookyoung and Mina), and an idol group consisting of 7 members (all members excluding Youkyoung). The groups debuted on July 30, 2012, with their single album Angel's Story.

History

2012: Debut ("Elvis"), acting and Wanna Be

The eight members were introduced individually through eight different teaser photos released from July 16, 2012 to July 23, 2012 (in order: Seolhyun, Choa, Hyejeong, Chanmi, Yuna, Mina, JiMin & Youkyoung (Y)).[1][2] AOA was revealed to be a dance group, with some members also playing instruments. Youkyoung (or "Y") is listed as a "half-angel/half-mortal", because she is only a member of the band half, playing the drums, resulting in AOA saying they are a "7+1" group. Explaining the concept of their debut FNC revealed that the seven "full angel" members (Seolhyun, Choa, Hyejeong, Chanmi, Yuna, Mina, and leader Jimin) looked on the human world through their crystal ball, and fell in love with the music of humanity. Youkyoung, the "half-angel, half-mortal", also referred to as the key keeper, became curious about the human world and used the key to visit it with the other angels.[3] The first music video teaser for "Angel's Story" was released on July 24, 2012[4] and the second teaser was released on July 26, 2012.[5] "Angel's Story" was leaked on July 28, 2012, with 2 days before the official release.[6] The music video for the title track "Elvis" was released on July 30, 2012. AOA had their debut stage on 9 August on M!Countdown following by Music Bank on 10 August.

HyeJeong appeared in FT Island's music video "I Wish."

FNC confirmed that the group would be making a comeback with their second single album "Wanna Be" on October 10. The album cover was released along with the announcement, depicting the 8 members as different fictional characters.[7] Hyejeong, Jimin, Choa, Yuna, Chanmi, Mina, Seolhyun and Youkyoung dressed as characters from Kill Bill, Léon, Legally Blonde, Tomb Raider, Harry Potter, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Romeo and Juliet, and The Fifth Element respectively. It was confirmed that 5 member band unit, AOA Black would perform on stage on the first week of promotions for "Get Out".[8] AOA Black made their first comeback appearance on October 10 broadcast of KM's Music Triangle and performed the band version of "Get Out" for the first time.[8] The band made their second appearance on the October 12 broadcast of KBS2's Music Bank.[8]

Seolhyun and Hyejeong started their drama activities not long after the promotions for "Get Out" ended. Seolhyun made her acting debut in "My Daughter Seo-young" as CNBLUE's Lee Jung-shin's love interest named Seo Eunsoo.[9] Hyejeong, who previously made a cameo in A Gentleman's Dignity, was cast in Cheongdam-dong Alice as Moon Geun Young's younger sister named Han Sejin.[10]

2013: Musical, AOA Black and Red Motion

On February 5, Seolhyun was chosen as the new face of Clean & Clear alongside actress Lee Se-young, and was cast in the 2013 KBS daily drama "Ugly Alert" as "Gong Na Ri".[11][12] Yuna was cast in the musical adaptation of Japanese drama "Summer Snow" in the role of "Seolhee", the female protagonist.[13] Choa was cast in her first musical High School Musical, playing the role of "Gabriella".[14]

On July 11, it was announced that the band unit, AOA Black (which consists of Jimin, Choa, Yuna, Youkyung, and Mina) would be making a comeback with their third single album with the title song "MOYA". The 3rd single album and "MOYA" music video was released on July 26, 2013 and AOA Black made their first comeback stage on KBS Music Bank on the same day.[15] The reception to "MOYA" was very positive, hitting number one on online Korean music charts such as Bugs, Monkey3 & Soribada on the day of its release.[16]

On September 29, FNC uploaded a mysterious teaser onto their YouTube account, hinting an artist's comeback,[17] and it was confirmed to be AOA's the next day.[18] On October 1, FNC released teaser pictures for AOA's comeback (album title: "Red Motion").[19] AceOfAngels8, AOA's YouTube account, uploaded a "Red Motion" concept teaser on October 3.[20] On October 8, the teaser for their title song, "Confused" (Korean title: "Shaking"], was uploaded.[21] On October 9, the music video for "Confused" was released.[22] The full album was released on the 13th October, along with an "eye contact version" dance practice clip.[23] On December 28, FNC announced that Mina is casted in an upcoming weekend KBS 2TV drama, 'Good Days Indeed' as younger version of Kim Hee-sun's character.[24] The drama will start airing on February 2014.[24]

2014: "Miniskirt" and first win

On January 16, AOA came back with another sexy concept and released their 5th single album (along with a music video) titled 'Miniskirt' produced by Brave Brothers, ElephantKingdom, and Galactika.[25] The title song 'Miniskirt' hit #1 on online Korean music charts, such as Bugs, Soribada, and Monkey3 on the day it was released.[26]

On February 9th, AOA celebrated their first win on SBS Inkigayo with their title song, 'Miniskirt'.[27]
