Audio files are missing the length

When an audio file is included, it does miss the total length of the audio playback which is not very nice UX. (e.g. Stephen Frys infobox with his voice) 78.35.216.103 (talk) 01:12, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Harold Ramis

On his page, it says he collaborated with Eugene Levy on Caddyshack. He did not. He did though on the film Club Paradise, which you did not list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.148.213.8 (talk) 01:30, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see anywhere in Harold Ramis that is says that he collaborated with Eugene Levy on Caddyshack. And I do see a mention of Club Paradise. I sugest that you suggest specific changes at Talk:Harold Ramis DES (talk) 01:42, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Birth/death dates in article text of subject's parents

Is there a guideline somewhere that says that we should/shouldn't put birth/death dates in the article text of the subject's parents? Something like "John Doe is the son of Joseph Doe (1934-1994) and Jane Doe (1935- )." I know I can be bold and remove such text if I don't like it, so please don't point me to WP:BOLD. I'm just looking for some guideline that says one way or another is preferred. I thought I remembered seeing something like this but I can't recall where. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 01:51, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any specific guideline on the point. If the dates are cited, or not challenged as inaccurate, then the question would be whether they are relevant to the article on the child. They might well be, if hardly essential. If giving only years they can't possibly assist identity theft, I see no harm that is at all likely. DES (talk) 14:41, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing errors on Harsha Bhogle

    Reference help requested.

Hi could anyone help me fix up this Harsha Bhogle article? I thought I should update it with his latest work.

I've done a few things, but you can learn how to use citation templates to add references. Also, you may want to review the guideline on external links. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 06:56, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Notability of academic journals

Dear editors: I am trying to help a new editor who is creating an article about a journal, the type in which researchers publish their results. I am trying to explain about reliable sources. I thought that I would use as examples a couple of existing journals. Much to my surprise, after looking at 20 or so articles with titles beginning "Journal of...", I am unable to find even one with multiple sources showing that the journal has been written about extensively in other publications. Am I missing something? How can one tell if a journal is "notable"? And if journals are supposed to have external sources, can someone point me to an appropriate example? Thanks. —Anne Delong (talk) 05:46, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Nature (journal) has plenty of sources. Dismas|(talk) 11:17, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Essays Wikipedia:Notability (periodicals) and more specifically Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals) (the latter are a subset of the former) may be helpful to some degree. User:DGG might be able to offer some advice. I note that the article on Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the oldest and longest-running scientific journal in the world, is distinctly lacking in significant coverage in independent sources.
I guess the page in question is Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/American Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research? Arthur goes shopping (talk) 11:32, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I wanted to give general advice on notability, so I will refer the editor to Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals). I checked out Nature (journal), and it appears to have plenty of sources, but of the ones that are online, if you discount sources that aren't about the journal, sources that are from the journal itself, sources that are Wikipedia articles, and press releases, there isn't that much left. Thanks, everyone, for your input. —Anne Delong (talk) 14:59, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nature, being perhaps the most famous journal in the world, has sources, but this is an unusual exception. The GNG simply does not work for this type of material (it also does not work for newspapers and popular periodicals). The usual rule for inclusion is being covered by selective indexes. There is incomplete agreement over which indexes are sufficiently selective, but no journal with coverage in Journal citation Reports has been deleted in the last 5 year sat least. (they are heavily biased against anything that is not a mainstream English language journal from a major science=producing country, and in any case cannot by their very nature include journals with less than two years of publication data, which means that we can not limit ourself to this one criterion.) the journal in question is however very dubious for inclusion on any reasonable criterion: they have so far published only one issue, and are not sponsored by any reputable institution or established publisher. If there were references to it, they'd just be PR. I've commented accordingly. I try to avoid just referring people to our complicated and usually ambiguous policy has if it were meaningful explanation DGG ( talk ) 17:18, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Before today, you were likely the only person who knew that the page even existed. Editors don't generally go looking through other editor's sandboxes. They are there for your use, for the most part. I've placed a welcome message on your talk page but the gist of your question can likely be answered at Wikipedia:Your first article. This article was moved to Charles Worth with no prior discussions al all, and although the editor may have meant well there is a reason for using his complete name. I have reverted the talk page but cannot seem to find how to revert the article itself. Help /guidance appreciated. Thanks Edmund Patrick confer 11:37, 25 February 2014 (UTC) 11:36, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, you don't want to move the talk page by itself. It will move with the main article when that is moved. (well, technically there is a checkbox asking if the talk page should be moved as well)
To answer your question though, you could ask discuss the move with the editor who moved the page. Starting a discussion on the talk page for other editors to see would probably be most beneficial. If you can't move the article back on your own, you could ask an admin to do it at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Though the admin is going to want a well reasoned argument as to why it should be done. Thanks, interestingly the talk page had the undo option but the article page did not, I assumed (!) or hoped that do one and other follows. Thanks, I have left a message with the editor in question. The reasonable discussion should have been before the move not now, I am now having to spend time on having to argue against something that should not have happened in the first place Ta.Edmund Patrick confer 11:58, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Caption layout

If I have a tall, thin picture and a long caption, is there any way I can give the caption more horizontal space without increasing the size of the image? 86.176.209.54 (talk) 13:44, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Not inside a standard thumb. You can try using a template like {{Image frame}}. Edokter (talk) — 14:24, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Judging by their edit history, I'm assuming they mean the image here. It looks perfectly fine to me; if it's an issue for other users I would suggest just editing the image and adding some whitespace to the sides and refrain from using unconventional templates in actual articles. Scarce2 (talk) 14:31, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO a slightly larger image helps - 100px gives 14 lines of text, 130px only 9, so the length is no greater, but the image is clearer and by avoiding one word per line in the caption, the text is more readable. Arjayay (talk) 15:03, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, you're right of course. Thanks. 86.176.209.54 (talk) 18:22, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Copy/Import a article from a foreign Wikipedia into English Wikipedia?

I found an article in the German Wikipedia that is about an American Athlete. This article is NOT listed in the English wiki. Can I just copy and paste a google translation of that story? I understand I may need to clean up the English as not everything will translate 100% correctly. I can handle that. What I don't know is if there is different procedure in place for doing this or if there is some method that should be done to cite that this is being taken (more or less) verbatim from the German site? RedRamage (talk) 17:06, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Thanks much! RedRamage (talk) 17:19, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You should show attribution of the source text by placing {{translated page}} on the talkpage of your article when you are done. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:26, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    What was that template?

A long time ago, I stumbled across a template that could be used to display content with a border and caption very similar to image formatting. This was not a quote template like {{quote box}}, though the formatting was very similar. You could use it around latex, IIRC, though I failed to use it for a {{clade}}-based tree (I didn't know of {{cladogram}} at the time). I'm ultimately asking because I'd like to treat a floral formula like a captioned image. Circéus (talk) 18:07, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Found it. Thatw as {{image frame}}. Circéus (talk) 19:30, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have added citations on the page called The Westport Library; how do I delete the box asking for citations for verification?Franksaid (talk) 18:19, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

However, there are still some unreferenced claims in the article. Are you able to provide references for these? Thanks for providing the references that you have. Mjroots (talk) 18:39, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Franksaid, you would remove the notice by deleting {{refimprove|date=February 2014}} near the top of the article. However I see that all but one of the added citations are to The Westport Library 1908-2008 Century Report, which looks as if it might not be independent of the library, and the other is to a grant notice from the "Institute of Museum and Library Services". Such notices often draw heavily on the grant applications drafted by the institutions applying for grants. Any additions clearly independent sources would be welcome. The section Ted Genoways#Controversy already includes some coverage of this matter, although not nearly at the length of the story you link to. How to block editor

Someone continues to sabotage our page (WRFF). The IP address is 68.45.204.148-you can look and see how many times they have edited it with incorrect information. How do we go about blocking this person from access to our page?

    20:34, 25 February 2014 (UTC)~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Radioriot1045 (talkcontribs)

Hi Radioriot; so first of all you should know that no one owns any Wikipedia page. Wikipedia pages can be edited by anyone and no one person has control over any article. Since the page appears to be being vandalised by multiple IPs, you should make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection for the page to be semi-protected. This will stop anyone without an autoconfirmed account from editing the page. Currently that would include yourself, but once you've had the account for 4 days and made 10 edits you'll be autoconfirmed. Lastly you should read the Conflict of Interest guidelines, which outline why it's generally a bad idea to work on articles you're related to or being paid to work on. for starters, 1) it is not "your" webpage, it can be edited by anyone who follows Wikipedia policies for content (and behavior). 2) as a person with a conflict of interest you may not be able to fully apply Wikipedia's neutral point of view to your own work, and so you should not edit the article directly (except in extreme cases of egregious material). 3) We only use what we can verify as having been previously published in a reliable source. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:07, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Query re Revision History pages

I notice that although two small edits I made this week to two Wiki articles have obviously been accepted (because the current Wiki articles appear with those edits), they are listed in the Revision History pages for those articles with "(undo)" beside them. Why is this? P123cat1 (talk) 00:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Every edit has "undo" next to it. See WP:UNDO CTF83! 00:20, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. And your edits have not "been accepted", in any active sense. It's just that no-one has seen fit to revert or change them. I had a quick look at your edits to articles myself, and found four. Three were, in my view, clear improvements. One I considered a change very slightly for the worse, but certainly not to the point where I will do anything about it. This is, I would say, par for the course or better. I am certainly happy enough myself if three-quarters of my edits survive in the long term. Maproom (talk) 07:40, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that information, Maproom. I don't know if the practice of putting (undo) beside edits in the list is new. I have made edits in the past, but have never noticed this before. (I am curious to know which edit you found not so good, but if it is difficult for you look it up, please don't bother - you have better things to do with your time!) Lauren Powers (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hi Help Desk. I represent entertainment personality Lauren Powers. And I was asked to look into repetitive forced changes to her Wiki page.

Someone keeps maliciously changing her birthdate on her Wiki page to attempt to reflect her to be 5 years older than she really is. She was born in 1962, and this is supported by her California Drivers License.

Lauren has competitor interests that are trying to keep her from being successful with her own line of National Fitness Competitions, and we believe they are changing the date to sabotage her and adversely affect her TV, Film and commercial bookings in Hollywood.

How can we permanently change the Wiki entry to reflect the birth year of 1962, and NOT 1958 that it keeps getting changed to? Is there a way to verify this and then lock it out from future changes? 1962 is accurate. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heshion (talkcontribs) 06:22, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you changed her DoB from 1958 to 1962, then changed it again to 1961. What would really help is a reliable published source. I doubt that a driver license qualifies. Maproom (talk) 07:57, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Disambiguation/Redirect

I want to change the page The Full English into a disambiguation for that term rather than just a redirect to the page that was there before, now The Full English (album). I can't see this information on any of the disambiguation pages: can I just change the page contents and include a link to The Full English (album) or will this undermine how moving pages works? A template of what I want to make the disambiguation page look like is available in my sandbox. Thanks for your help! RuthSalter (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you can replace the redirect by what you've got in your sandbox. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:31, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Ruth. The sandbox version you've created looks fine, just move it over the redirect to the new title The Full English. The page history is all at The Full English (album), so you won't destroy anything by putting a dab page there instead. Yunshui  14:32, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add information to Wikipedia?

I would like to add some information about technology adoption to Wikipedia...how do I do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lori McCrae (talkcontribs) 16:12, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

first you find reliably published sources that verify the claims about the subject. then you find the article and you edit it just like you did here, presenting content from a neutral point of view, representing all major academic views of the subject. then you add footnotes so that others can verify the content. then you add an edit summary to help people understand what/why behind your edit. then you save. then you be prepared for other editors to adopt, move, rewrite, remove your content as they assess it against existing content and their reliable sources. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 16:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
    • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 17:33, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Finding the culprit on a page with hundreds of transclusions

At requested moves there is one request out of a few hundred that is transcluding one or more ref tags, causing the project page to display a cite error message at the bottom of a missing reflist. If nothing is done it's not that big a deal; within a week or two it will fall out in the natural course as requests are closed. But I was wondering if anyone can think of a way to easily find the culprit – that is, something less stupidly mechanical and laborious than opening up a few hundred requests to find the offending member.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's Talk:Memorial Medical Center and Hurricane Katrina, I added a reflist, previewed, and clicked the button to go up to the reference. Samwalton9 (talk) 18:19, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I made an edit at Talk:Memorial Medical Center and Hurricane Katrina that hopefully will get rid of the red error message the next time the RMCD bot runs. EdJohnston (talk) 18:31, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I at first thought it didn't work, and attempted to add noinclude tags, but yeah, I would have to wait for the bot to manually refresh (I forgot, these are not direct tranclusions [and now I know or suspect how Sam found this, by just opening up Wikipedia:Requested moves/Current discussions and searched for the ref tags]). Thanks all!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:40, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My fix doesn't work. Will leave a note for User:Wbm1058 the author of the bot, to see if he understands it. EdJohnston (talk) 19:55, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@EdJohnston: Ah, well the attempt is appreciated. Since /Current discussions is transcluded at the WP:RM main page, I'll just go add noinclude tags around the ref's there.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:08, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, I think it did work. When I search the current discussion page for ref tags I find them in that discussion in noinclude tags, so then I backtracked and saw you did not edit that page but the discussion page, which means the bot successfully incorproated your edits on its run. So, why is the error tag still showing? Lo and behold, when I search current discussions I find that there is a second discussion with a ref tag (conspiring to confound us). Let's see if noincluding that gets rid of the error.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:14, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, fixed. Thanks again.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:18, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

() The bot doesn't use transclusion to create the current discussions list, so hiding with noinclude tags won't work. You can either pull the {{Reflist-talk}} inside the proposer's signature, and thus include the refs on the RM/CD page, or pull the citations outside the proposer's signature, so that they are an additional comment by the proposer in support. I think the second option is preferable, so I'll try that. Wbm1058 (talk) 20:37, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Wbm1058: Because /current discussions is transcluded into WP:RM, the noinclude tags will not affect what one sees if viewing /current discussions directly, but it will if viewing WP:RM, which is all we really care about, yes? And it actually did fix that display.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yes, I think you're right. Of course we may need to null edit/purge the page to make sure that the latest version is transcluded. Sigh, it's complicated. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:22, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is. Thanks for taking over and maintaining the bot. The extra work needed to run RM before it and when it was down was really complicated.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:36, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    What to do?

Some IP's (in a range that is blocked) warned me on my Talk page about a user that allegedly was previously "lying" and "discrediting" other users. The user that was under question, removed the info from my talk page. But I presume that it is my talk page and no one else is removing text. While I do not support what the IP's wrote (meaning, that I did not even considered it interesting enough to start an inquiry) I consider it as just a point of view. But the user that is bespoken of, argues it is a personal attack and requests me coercively to remove the text. I would like to know whether someone is free to remove personal attack from other's Talk page. And whether I need to give in to the request. Or what other road would be best to follow. I do not like to hear bad talk about other users, but I can imagine cases where it is desirable that users inform about other users. And I like to retain a level of freedom of speech as well. I would like to hear some advises on this one. Kind regards, Timelezz (talk) 21:26, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Timelezz. Does WP:USERTALKBLOG help at all? --ColinFine (talk) 00:17, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Timelezz, WP:NPA and the related WP:RPA do apply to all discussion pages, including your user page. Whether a particular statement is a personal attack is a judgement call depending on the circumstances and context, but a statement such as you describe quite possible qualifies. you could edit the statement to change "User:Example tells lies" to "User:Example [has made inaccurate statements]" (or something of the sort) with the square brackets indicating that the original wording has been altered. If the original comment included on-wiki links (or better diffs) I see no reason why those would need to be deleted or redacted. I will say that unless you were interacting or likely to interact with "User A" it would be rather uncivil of "User B" for no obvious reason except to harm User A's reputation. If anyone really thinks there is a general problem with a user, it can be aired at a request for comment on a user. Then everything is open and transparent. DES (talk) 00:46, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! What is a personal attack is of course a gray area. I've replied to take it on with a moderator who now removed/moderated several sections in the thread. I'll respect the moderator's decision. I think that is in line with WP:USERTALKBLOG. I thank you for the support to not allow other users to remove information from my talk page, and not accept every request for removal, even though I was accussed of being a colloborator. I'm grateful to have this heard from you guys. Kind regards , Timelezz (talk) 11:42, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@DES: Would you please review the ANI report and reconsider your advice above. This case involves an IP hopper who has spent a couple of months posting outrageous attacks on an editor (outrageous in that they repeatedly attack the integrity of the editor, while offering nothing but bluster as substantiation). Timelezz is still not understanding what is appropriate for a user talk page, and they are interpreting your generic remarks as at least a partial vindication of their position. (e/c) Hi Kslavick. You will see a link for "contributions" at the top of every page. Though Toshio pointed out that the AFC process is backlogged, he didn't mention to you that your draft is not in the review queue. Your article had been reviewed & declined, but you deleted the feedback template. I have added it back in for you, and that template gives a button for you to resubmit when you are ready. Your draft was, however, nowhere near ready to be resubmitted. I have put a few useful links for you on your user talk page. You need to read them, & probably a number of further links from those pages. Looking at your draft again, I see that Fuhghettaboutit has done a lot of work on it and resolved a number of the problems. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:59, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Click "Contributions" at the top right to see your edits. In [1] you removed {{AFC submission|...}}. This removed the box with the link you need to resubmit the article. An editor has restored the box so you can resubmit when you are ready. Another has added {{reflist}} so your references are displayed. I suspect that originally you clicked "Submit your draft when you are ready for it to be reviewed!" before having saved the draft. This meant your original draft was lost. Don't click any submission link when you are previewing, only when you are viewing a saved page. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:06, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Large Blank Space After Moving Text for Eleonora Abbagnato

    Hi,

I did a bit of cleaning up of the entry on Eleonora Abbagnato which had some problems with English usage. I also moved the information about her marriage into a separate paragraph from the rest of the entry which focused on her professional career. Somehow, this created a large blank space between these final two paragraphs and I can't seem to make it go away. Can you fix it please?

    Editing Gas Detector

Hi I have just submitted an edit for the subject of Gas detector.

I received a warning listing about my edit. As this is my first time ever making an edit like this I am not sure if it is a standard procedure or if I have genuinely done something wrong. I have referenced and linked to an article that I wrote on our web page on the topic. However before I did this I checked a couple of other references on the page and they linked to websites. Could it be the original article was going to be a blog but I have changed it to be a static page on our website. I think the URL still mentions blog but not sure how to remove it?

Before I continue I would like to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Hi KaivalyaNagavekar. There is no automatic translation between languages. You can search the language links on the left hand side of any page to see if there is an article in the Marathi Wikipedia (mr:मुखपृष्ठ) but there is none for Vaisakhi. This really only leaves you with looking for information from some other website or source in Marathi. You could use Google Translate to view a machine translation of the page from English into Marathi (see here) but machine translations are notoriously poor.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:33, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to offer my services to organizations that have Wikipedia entries which are not well-written. The work I would offer would not be marketing work (except, of course, that better language gives a better image), but simple brush-up of grammar and style.

Would this paid service go against the spirit of Wikipedia?

    Thanks for your help.

    Yes it would, see WP:COI and WP:BESTCOI.--ukexpat (talk) 15:12, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to disagree. Assuming, for the purpose of argument, that the service this person is proposing to offer is in fact copy-editing and re-writing of existing articles, with no significant change in content, I don't see this as violating the current COI guideline. What the "spirit of Wikipedia" demands is hard to say, not all will agree. It seems to me that improvements in the grammar and language of articles that do not introduce or increase bias are quite in line with the "spirit of Wikipedia". That said, i would advise that if the OP goes forward with this s/he should: 1) register an account; 2) disclose this service on his or her user page, along with a list of articles edited in connection with this service, and a list of the clients who paid for each; 3) also disclose such paid editing on the talk page of any article so edited. The proposed change to the Terms of Use would require something of the sort, and it would be best to get in line with it early, in my view. DES (talk) 22:22, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to resort to a slippery slope argument - if we allow paid editing for minor stuff, it is a certainty (not necessarily in this case but more generally) that it will quickly slide into more aggressive editing.--ukexpat (talk) 13:11, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
People hold honestly differing opinions on this matter, but If I recall correctly, there was an RfC that would have effectively banned all paid editing, and that proposal did not achieve consensus. So when asked for advice, we should not act as if that were the policy. Stating our own opinions is perfectly proper, particularly when asked about the "spirit of Wikipedia" rather than the letter of the current policy/guideline, but it is not a bad idea to make it clear that there is a range of views on the point. 13:32, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

In brief, I noticed that all the external links I put during last month were removed by him, apparently because of conflict issues.

I would like to kindly clear this matter with you:'LifeMap Discovery database', is an novel up-to-date database that integrates multiple scientific areas such as developmental biology, stem cells and regenerative medicine which is reviewed constantly by a group of qualified scientists all over the world. Our intention is to provide additional valuable information to Wikipedia users about relevant subjects (e.g., links for human organ/tissue development and more).

Nevertheless, LifeMap people have been in dialog with WikiPedia about contributing content and imagery to expand upon developmental biology subjects.

If such a contribution as the external links seems to be problematic, I would like to kindly ask what is the best way we should approach it.

I would highly appreciate your thoughts on this.

    Many thanks,

    submission error

hello we have a prob with:

    Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Sofar Sounds

The comment from the moderator was: "Needs to be better formatted".

Not entirely sure what this means specifically. Could we get a little more information on how to improve?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Monicasofar (talkcontribs) 11:52, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it looks like the article is repeated twice so cut back to only one, the citations do not have enough enough information (publication date , author - the "cite" widget above the editing box can help with that formatting). The section titles "Format" and "Music" are not intuitive to me and after reading them, seem to serve more of an advertisement than encyclopedia coverage, which would focus more on history and impact. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:43, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Felllatio pictures

I'm rather liberal, but you may not be aware of the photo's on the Wikipedia page "Fellatio". The scientific and legal definitions are OK it's the drawings that you might want to examine for appropriateness. I would think from the definition of the word fellatio one would understand its a verb describing a sexual act. I know some of the photos are artistic expressions, but is this the place to post these and are they necessary? Title is wrong

    Hi!

My name is Andrea and I work as International coordinator at the University of Skövde in Sweden. I have just noticed that the name of our university is wrong on the page Skövde University College

I could not edit it, maybe because it is the title. Could you make the change for us? The correct name is University of Skövde.

    Thanks in advance!

    (Question about editing) "Categories Box"

While I was researching methods for adding categories to pages I came across something on Help:Category that I was hoping someone could clarify. It's the last sentence of the fourth paragraph in section "2 Putting pages in categories", and it states:

"The categories box also provides links to quickly add, remove, or modify category declarations on the page, without having to edit the whole page"

These links/tools sound like they'd be very helpful to editors, but after looking at dozens of pages I just can't seem to locate any examples of them. So my guess is that either: A) I'm looking in the wrong place; B) there's something wrong with my account (or browser) that is preventing the links from being displayed; or C) the links were part of the Categories Box template at one time but have since been removed — and the Help page just hasn't been updated yet to reflect it.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. --Echo73 15:55, 27 February 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Echo73 (talkcontribs)

Trouble editing normal text near foreign-language text

In Taher Saifuddin, I wanted to edit the date information after the foreign-language representation of his name, changing "born on 4th August 1888" to "4 August 1888 – 12 November 1965". After a few months away, I have decided to take another crack at an article submission after it was declined due to inadequate sourcing. I had sources, but the Wikipedia editor said since they came from interviews they were not objective. (Though I did not quote the artist in any of them, only the bio material that was in the stories.) Out of curiosity, I looked up several other contemporaries of my subject on Wikipedia. Without exception, they all used "interviews" of the subject as sources. In some cases, interviews were used only. Did I receive a tougher editor or is there a rule that interviews cannot be used as source material even though these other entries were allowed? I find myself in a situation in which there is plenty of material, but like many human subjects of interest, it is all found in stories that include interviews. Please advise. Thanks. (P.S. I was rusty when I went back into the article and couldn't seem to remember how to insert a new source properly. It is there in the text, but does not show in the draft for some reason.)

    Please advise.

Thank you.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Wkolosky (talkcontribs)

The issue isn't that the source is an interview per se - it is in a reliable source - but that the draft needs more references from reliable sources. At the moment the interview is the only secondary source.--ukexpat (talk) 16:32, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
the promotional blurbs that accompany interviews are generally just promotional fluff regurgitating the interviewee's CV not anything that validates that third parties have taken an un-involved interest in the subject. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:25, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I said per se. There is no blanket rule that interviews in otherwise reliable sources can never be used. They must reviewed just like any other source. --ukexpat (talk) 17:40, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for these answers...I understand all. But can someone tell me why Bass Musician Magazine is not a reliable source? (No promotional blurbs are included in my draft from these sources.) Thanks.

I didn't say it wasn't reliable, but as with any source, even for example the New York Times, you have look what it actually says to see if it supports what is being cited.--ukexpat (talk) 18:36, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The idea of this project was first suggested by a fan of Led Zeppelin while Robert was on tour during The Fate Of Nations in January 1994. The Mexico show was the last night and while the audience applauded that, Plant responded negatively having a deep desire to continue performing. He was at the end of his solo run. The fan was staying at the same Hotel as Plant in Mexico City met up with him 3 times. They discussed why the fan had traveled from Maryland USA to the show and Plant expressed interest in his Led Zeppelin necklace the "Hermit" among other things Zeppelin. Over breakfast the day after the show the fan expressed a concern and an idea about Plant's next project. While Plant was at first reluctant about the suggestion he made a promise to the fan. A copy of the handmade Hermit necklace for a phone call to Jimmy. Hands shuck. This call quickly led to the fan hearing on the radio back in the States that Plant and Page were in the studio recording. Ten year later the fan on Father's Day delivered the necklace to Security who delivered it to Plant. Plant wore the necklace that night for the Strange Sensations at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. Promises kept by fan and legend! The 2 albums and tours were a great hit to many fans who never saw Zeppelin. [3]

    Rejected article on AFC

Hi. I wrote an article on Ken Block last month (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Ken Block (businessman)) and it was rejected yesterday. I followed the guidelines in the AFC wizard to the letter so I'm not sure what I did wrong. The reviewer left a link but it doesn't work. I'm guessing they meant WP:POLITICIAN but I didn't submit Block as a politician. I was going by Wikipedia:Notability (people) ("If a person has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, they are presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article.") on the fourth page of the AFC wizard (Wikipedia:Article wizard/Biographical notability). I included 54 cited references which all pass Wikipedia:RS (Wikipedia:Article wizard/Sources). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 72.74.204.125 (talk) 00:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It may be that Hasteur meant to type WP:N (the main notability page) and changed his mind and intended WP:POLITICIAN. Since Block is a politician, or at least a political figure, deriving most of his notability from his campaign for Governor and his subsequent political stands and advocacy. So it is appropriate to look at WP:POLITICIAN. He clearly does not pass point 1 of that, as he has never held office. Point 2 could be argued. So we fall back to WP:ANYBIO or the WP:GNG (point 3 of is basically just the WP:GNG restated). I will look this over from that point of view, and respond further. DES (talk) 00:31, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The draft looks acceptable to me, but as a matter of courtesy, and in case I missed soemthign relevant, i have left a message for the previous reviewer on User talk:Hasteur#Draft:Ken Block (businessman). DES (talk) 01:15, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, while I would tend to approve this, there are a number of improvements that I think can and should be made. First, since Block is largely notable as a political figure -- his business career alone would probably not justify an article -- I would name this Ken Block (politician) or perhaps "political activist". Secondly, in the "Master Lever" section especially there is some prose that confuses what is being attributed to Block or others with what is being stated as fact. In particular, the sentence "The master lever also created an unfair advantage for majority political parties at the expense of minority and third-parties." is stated as if it were a fact, but is uncited. It looks to me as if this is the opinion of Block, or perhaps of the Moderate Party or others seeking removal of the "master lever" option. If so, it needs to be clearly attributed. That whole paragraph blurs from attributed opinion to what look like statements of fact, but are probably continued opinion. This needs to be fixed. Also, there is little or no mention of any negative opinions of Block. This makes it look like a promotional article. The reliably sourced negative opinions of Block (and I can't beloved that there are none, after he was in a campaign for Gov, much less his other activities) must be quoted and attributed. DES (talk) 01:15, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help. I'll keep working on the article. The claim "The master lever also created an unfair advantage for majority political parties at the expense of minority and third-parties." is sourced to Politifact.com, WarwickOnline.com. I included everything I could find online that appeared to be a reliable source. There's not a whole lot of criticism of Block, I think, simply because he's never held political office. That being said there are criticisms of Block included in the article. In the "2010 election" section he's blamed by political insiders, and specifically the RI Republican Party, for his part in the 4-way race that got Chafee elected into office (citations 5 and 8). The fourth paragraph of the "Jump to the Republican Party" deals with his poor rating on PolitiFact.com (citation 51). I know he got some flak for joining the Republican Party though I don't have a specific source for that. 72.74.204.125 (talk) 03:11, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Er no it isn't do sourced. Neither of those articles mention an effect on mintority parties at all, ewither in the editorial voice or in a quote attributesd to Block or indeed to anyone else. Moreover, neither is cited in the Wikipedia article to support that statement. But this discussion should now move to the article talk page. DES (talk) 11:00, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I know what it is, what I do not know is how I changed the visibility of it. I did not make any edits on that article--☾Loriendrew☽ (talk) 12:11, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry. Are you sure you didn't click the Enable feedback button on the left? One click is enough to turn it on. Samwalton9 (talk) 12:13, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
ok, I see that link now. I must have unintentionally hit it while scrolling, bloody ipad. Is there a way to turn it off, or just leave it?--☾Loriendrew☽ (talk) 12:30, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Remove the link with the below in your CSS. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    #t-articlefeedbackv5-enable {display: none;}

Before I do that, it seems that would make me not see the tool but it would not remove the inadvertent tool addition to the article. I dont see how the above addition would change anything but my views.--☾Loriendrew☽ (talk) 15:52, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It should completely remove the link, clickable place and whole line. Just try it. If it doesn't work then you can always remove the code. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:20, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    MediaWiki:User:Gabrielchihonglee/Main Page.css

May I have the right to edit that page?--Gabrielchihonglee (talk) 14:22, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pages in the MediaWiki namespace can only be edited by administrators. You can import User:Gabrielchihonglee/Main Page.css and ask other users to import it if they want to see the result. See Wikipedia:User scripts/Guide#Publishing a CSS file. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:22, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    moron pioneers is wrong

I just wanted you to go on and look at Danquart Weggeland and it says he did art for Moron Pioneers. I think you mean Mormon Pioneers... it would be really cool if you just fixed it. Ask another user to nominate Simon Mills (writer) for deletion...

...so, here I am. I came across this article that clearly doesn't belong on WP, and decided to try the AfD process. I got as far as I could, before finding the above message —from someplace that allowed me to 'View source':

    {{subst:afd2|pg={{subst:SUBPAGENAME}}|cat=U|text=Reason}} ~~~~

I thought I might find a way to do this, but as an IP, it appears I can't.  ~Help!  ~Eric  →

    Isn't there a bot that goes around fixing malformed AfDs?--ukexpat (talk) 18:48, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That won't help here because the AfD page needs to be created first for any bot to know to act and the issue is that IPs can't create non-talk pages so the person cannot create the AfD page itself. The best solution would be for you, 71.20.250.51, to create an account, which should take you less than one minute. I would go do the nomination for you and someone else might, but I am unwilling because from the text of your nomination it does not look like you have done any due diligence (see WP:BEFORE) to see whether this person is actually notable, rather than whether the article demonstrates notability. The former, and not the latter, is a proper basis for a resource intensive AfD.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:04, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing that I've found for that  Simon Mills is his homepage:[2] (it seems to be him). There are at least two other  "Simon Mills" who are notable "writers" (authors) [3] , [4](the one I was looking for)  ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 20:13, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As another user has nominated the article for deletion (without referring to your proposed nomination), I have placed your text their. Feel free to remove my framing of the issue and rewrite your text as you see fit (if you do remove my framing then please remove me entirely, including my signature, and note in your edit summary that I said it was okay with me, or you're likely to be reverted).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:20, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Widths of content on the right-hand side

Take a look at Alois Delug, and specifically the right-hand side. There's an infobox, a picture and a box with a link to Commons. All three are right-aligned but have different widths, and that's making the page look ugly. Is there a non-horrible way to fix that (i.e., no substing in templates onto the page and fiddling with magic numbers there, no hard-coding image widths)? Facing the Sky (talk) 15:31, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you could move the commons category template to the left by including "|position=left" to the template but I don't know if that will make it any prettier to you. It looks fine the way it is to me. If more text were added to the article, that would help the whitespace at the bottom of the article. Dismas|(talk) 15:46, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I tried previewing with the commonsbox on the left, but it didn't really look good there either (and I couldn't rationalise it appearing in the 'References' section anyway). That doesn't help the infobox-picture discord, either. I agree it'd look better with more text, but the article as it is needs some more sources dug out before it can be expanded. Facing the Sky (talk) 15:54, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
How about an 'External links' section at the bottom with |position=left parameter for the Commons link.  You can tinker with the infobox image by adding |image size =  Also, the thumbnail painting image can be tinkered with by replacing "thumb" with XXXpx (XXX is size in pixels). You could also consider moving the image to a {{gallery}} (and add others) -- which displays horizontally. ~Just a thought,  ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 16:28, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh!  See: Template:Commons category-inline ... this would work better for a link in the 'External links' section
    E.g.: {{Commons-inline|Alois Delug}} renders:
Media related to Alois Delug at Wikimedia Commons
    ~:71.20.250.51 (talk) 16:57, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with hard-coding a pixel size for the picture is that then there's no automatic resizing according to preference/resolution—but the image in the infobox, which partially determines the infobox's width, would get resized. So, that only works if the infobox's image and the picture are given fixed sizes and the infobox's extra padding is also fixed, but I think that that might cause problems across different viewing configurations (e.g., images too large on phone screens, or too small on big monitors).
If I can figure out a way to get Template:Authority control to render inline, an 'External links' section would be good for that and the commonsbox. Facing the Sky (talk) 17:03, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Should list-like "Popular culture" info be moved to an article or to a disambiguation page?

Dear editors: There's an article, Still waters run deep, and a redirect to it Still waters run deep (fable). There is also an old Afc submission Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Still waters run deep which has a "popular culture" section. Then there's another page Still waters run deep (disambiguation). Should the "popular culture" information be added to the mainspace article as it is in the draft, or would this be unnecessary duplication? If the extra items are added to the disambiguation page instead, does the attribution need to be preserved? (It's just a few words.) —Anne Delong (talk) 17:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"In popular culture" sections should have third party sources discussing the how/what/whys the appearance in popular culture is notable/worth encyclopedia coverage. Without that, the DAB is a better home. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:05, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After looking at those, I agree. The "popular culture" section in the AFC article is really a disambiguation list, and should be included only in the disambiguation article and nowhere else. Other articles should have a tag {{for}} or {{otheruses}} at the top.
I see no reason to list any of these popular culture items in the primary topic article, just because they happen to have the same name. The only exception might be for items where the title and its association with the primary topic is discussed in reliable sources. ~Amatulić (talk) 18:07, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. Thanks for taking time to check this out. —Anne Delong (talk) 21:55, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing errors on Bogmalo Beach

    Reference help requested.

Hello Referencebot, I can't figure out the reference error you've pointed out regarding the article Bogmalo Beach. Can you be more specific about the url. Thanks, (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 19:05, 28 February 2014 (UTC))[reply]

It was fixed long ago in [5]. A pipe '|' is part of template syntax and can normally not be part of a template parameter. If all the pipes in the title parameter had been encoded as {{!}} then it would have worked. Did you use a tool which encoded the first pipe in title=Bogmalo Beach {{!}} Goa Beaches | Goa | India, but not the rest? PrimeHunter (talk) 19:14, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Hope you can help,
