BtoB (/ˈb.t.b/; Korean: 비투비; acronym for Born to Beat) is a seven member male group from South Korea formed in 2012 by Cube Entertainment. The group consists of Seo Eunkwang, Lee Min Hyuk, Lee Changsub, Lim Hyunsik, Peniel D. Shin/Shin Dong-geun, Jung Ilhoon and Yook Sungjae. The group debuted on March 22, 2012 on M! Countdown with Insane and Imagine.[1]

Career

Pre-debut

The group was formed by Cube Entertainment. It was stated from the start that Seo Eunkwang, Lee Minhyuk, Lim Hyunsik, Jung Ilhoon and Lee Minwoo were on the list of original members who are waiting to be debuted under the name of "BtoB". They appeared on the JTBC sitcom "I Live in Cheongdam-dong" as an aspiring boy band working towards their debut.[2] However, Lee Minwoo had dropped out of the list of confirmed members after their first appearance on the sitcom and the fact of him not debuting with BtoB had upset many fans. On March 23, 2012, Cube Entertainment had clarified that there are problems with Minwoo's health resulting in him being unable to blend into the group. Adding on, he would still be a trainee under Cube. If he was to recover, he would still get a chance to debut. Minwoo was confirmed to debut as a C-Clown member under Yedang Entertainment.[3]

2012: Born to Beat, Asia Promotions and Press Play

On March 21, the group made their debut in a showcase held in Seoul, which was streamed from their official YouTube channel. They performed their title song "Insane", "Imagine", and various other songs.[4] On March 22, they made their official debut on Mnet's M! Countdown[5] followed by Music Bank, Music Core and Inkigayo. On April 3, 2012 they released their debut album Born to Beat, with songs co-written by Jörgen Elofsson.[6] Their first broadcast was on Mnet's reality program 'Amazon (Idol Master Zone) on April 4.[7] They followed-up with a digital single titled "Father" released on May 3, in conjunction with May being the 'Month of Family'[8] along with a music video. An "Asia Special Edition" of their first mini-album was released on May 23, which contained two new songs: "Father" and "Irresistible Lips", for which a music video was released on the same day.[9]

The release of the Born to Beat 'Asia Special Edition' album marked the official start of their Asia promotions. They kick-started their promotions with a press conference in Singapore along with a promotional event in Bugis Square which attracted a crowd of 800 people.[10] The following day, they performed at Clarke Quay for "Music Matters Live 2012", a five-night festival that featured 40 bands from 18 countries.[11] A month later, they resumed their Asia promotions in Indonesia, participating in an interview with OneTV Asia. In addition, they held their first Indonesian showcase at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta on June 21, performing for both fans and media officials.[12] They made their debut in Japan with a performance at the "K-Dream Live" concert at Tokyo Dome on July 29 alongside 5 other groups.[13] In addition, the group performed at Sapporo Dome on August 1 for the "K-Pop Nonstop Live 2012 In Sapporo" concert.[14]

Starting September 4, Cube Entertainment released various teaser images and videos for their comeback title track "Wow" and second mini-album.[15][16][17][18] On September 11, 2012 the group released the music video for "Wow" and their second mini album Press Play the day after.[19] On October 18, they started promoting "I Only Know Love" as the follow-up single on M! Countdown [20] followed by performances on other music programs. A music video for the song was released on October 22,[21] which consisted of a montage of the promotional events the group undertook throughout the year.

Following the end of their promotions for "I Only Know Love", the group commenced their overseas activities once again. They started off in Singapore on December 1, performing as part of a line-up for "Sundown Festival 2012", an event that invited solo and group acts from South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.[22] On December 11, the group performed as the opening act for the "2012 Asia Super Showcase" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at Kenanga Wholesale City.[23] The group became the first Korean artist to perform at the Thai Supermodel Concert on December 13 at the Bangkok Convention Center, and later held a press conference with around 70 media outlets.[24]

2013: United Cube Concert, 2nd Confession, Thriller

On February 2, 2013, the group participated in their first United Cube Concert alongside their Cube Entertainment label-mates. The concert took place in Seoul’s Jamsil Indoor Stadium, and attracted over 7,000 fans, local and international.[25] An additional concert was held in Yokohoma, Japan, in which the group sang a cover of Japanese band V6's "Feel Your Breeze" along with their other songs in front of more than 8,000 fans.[26]

On April 3, Cube Entertainment released hints of their second comeback through their official Twitter account, posting pictures from an music video set. Later, their comeback was confirmed, with a release of a digital single on April 10 titled "2nd Confession".[27]

On April 10, the group held their first fan-meet in Taiwan for over 1,000 fans. The set-list included a cover of Jay Chou's song "Rainbow".[28] Following their promotions for "2nd Confession", they held two additional fan-meets in Thailand and Cambodia, meeting with around 2,000 fans in total.[29][30]

On August 23, Cube Entertainment released concept pictures for their pre-release track, "When I Was Your Man", a track off their upcoming album[31] with a special music video for the song released a few days later.[32] Their first comeback stage was confirmed to be on September 4's episode of MBC Music's Show Champion, prior to the release of their 3rd mini-album titled Thriller on September 9.[33]

2014: Beep Beep

On January 2014 , BtoB released a image with the words "Ddui Ddui Bbang Bbang", which refers to sounds of cars and horn noise, hinting their comeback in February. On February 11, 2014, the first teaser of their title song Beep Beep was uploaded onto their official YouTube channel followed by the second and third teaser which were uploaded on February 12 and 13 respectively.[34] On February 16, 2014, the music video for Beep Beep was released onto YouTube followed by the release of the EP the following day.[35][36] Shortly after the EP was released, Btob's Beep Beep was number 1 on Hanteo’s real-time charts at 3:00 PM KST.[37] Their EP was also ranked in the top three positions on major online real-time charts such as Bugs and Soribada.[38]

Btob began promotional appearances on Mnet's M!Countdown on February 20, 2014 and also on other various music programs.[39]
