The Two Faces of January is an American thriller film written and directed by screenwriter Hossein Amini in his directorial debut. It is based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, and Oscar Isaac star in the film. Amini filmed on location in Greece and Turkey and at a studio in London. The film premiered in February 2014 in the Berlinale Special Galas section of the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.[1]

Synopsis

In 1962, the American couple Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his wife Colette (Dunst) tour Greece and visit the Acropolis of Athens. There, they meet Rydal (Isaac), who works as a tour guide but scams tourists in the process. The MacFarlands invite Rydal to dinner, and Rydal, entranced by the couple's wealth and beauty, accepts their invitation. While Rydal visits the MacFarlands' hotel, Chester presses him to help move an unconscious body. Rydal helps, but eventually gets caught up in ensuing events. He also becomes infatuated with Colette and runs the risk of provoking Chester's ire.[2]

Cast

Production

The Two Faces of January is written and directed by Hossein Amini in his directorial debut. Amini's screenplay is based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. Producer Tom Sternberg optioned the rights to the novel and originally set up a project with the production company Mirage. Sternberg developed the project with Amini, and it found the backing of StudioCanal and Working Title. Amini said he had wanted to direct a film adaptation of the novel for the past 15 years.[3]

Filming began in August 2012. Filming locations include Crete and Athens in Greece, Istanbul in Turkey, and Ealing Studios in London.[4]

Release

StudioCanal will distribute the film in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, and New Zealand. It will sell distribution rights for other territories.[4] Magnolia Pictures has picked up distribution rights for the United States, while Phase 4 Films acquired rights for Canada. Both distributors will release the film later in 2014.[5][6]
