Cynthia Levin is the producing artistic director of the Unicorn Theatre (Kansas City).[1]

Early Life

Levin was born in Washington, D.C and grew up there.[2] She attended Park University in Parkville, Missouri and majored in theatre.[3] She graduated magna cum laude in 1977.[4]

Career

After graduating, Levin worked briefly at the Missouri Repertory Theatre (now Kansas City Repertory Theatre), in summer stock theatre and at other local theatres.[5] In 1979, she was hired by the Theatre Workshop in Kansas City, which changed its name to the Unicorn Theatre in the early 1980s.[6] In her early years there, she acted, directed, stage managed, and designed sound and music for productions.[7] Levin became the artistic director in 1982, and guided their mission to produce new and contemporary plays,[8] in particular those which have never before been produced in Kansas City.[9] She has served as a director, actor, or designer for over 260 Unicorn productions.[10] She has also directed plays for UMKC Theatre and the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, as well as world premiere readings at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the M.F.A. playwright’s workshop.[11] Levin is a founding board member of the National New Play Network (NNPN).[12]

Honors and awards

In 1995, Levin was named one of Kansas City’s “Local Heroes” in the business magazine Ingram’s.[13] In 2000, the Unicorn Theatre received the Missouri Arts Council’s Arts Award.[14] Levin was awarded an honorary doctorate from Park University in 2002.[15] She has also received the Pinnacle of Excellence in the Arts Award from the Johnson County Library Foundation,[16] the Human Rights Campaign Award,[17] and the GLAAD Leadership Award.[18]
