Kattankudy [(Template:Lang-si), (Template:Lang-taகாத்தான்குடி), : is a city in Eastern province of Sri Lanka, notable for being the most densely populated city in South Asia. The city's population is denser than in any part of South Asia including Calcutta and the most densely populated Muslim region in the world. In two and a half square kilometers more than 50,000 inhabitants live in the township area of Kattankudy.
The city has grown up to be a larger Muslim populated area as after the traders from Arab countries visited Sri lanka. It was the site of the Kattankudy mosque massacre of 147 people who were praying in mosques in Kattankudy on 1990. It took place when around 30 Tamil rebels known as LTTE, raided two mosques in the town of Kattankudy, where over 300 people were prostrating in Isha prayers.
Kattankudy, which has the largest Muslim settlement in Sri Lanka, is one hundred percent Muslim populated area. These Muslims are also economically enterprising. It is located along its eastern coastline, about 323 kilometres away from the capital city, Colombo. This township is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Batticaloa lagoon to the west, in the south, Manmunaipattu Divisional Secretariat and the other in the north, Manmunai North Divisional secretariat, which lies adjacent to the provincial town of Batticaloa, a Tamil dominated municipality. Demographically, Kattankudy is the highest density of population in Sri Lanka with over 48,874 people and 13,344 families, according to the 2001 census, crowded within an area of 6.5 square kilometres.
Commercial buildings and Reasidential houses sit cheek by jowl in Kattankudy and it is known to be the commercial place of Eastern Province. The beautiful city has now been upgraded and resembles an Arabian town. The city literally looks very busy throughout the whole week except on Fridays.
This population density of nearly 6,200 square kilometres is more than double the average of 3,043 for the whole country as of 2001 census. However, according to some leading local residents of this township, the total population currently stands at nearly 60,000 which makes the density even more cramped.
