The Walking Dead: Season Two is an ongoing episodic graphic adventure based on Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic book series and developed by Telltale Games. It is the sequel to The Walking Dead, with the first episode released digitally in December 2013, and a retail collector's DVD edition planned at the conclusion of the season.[9][10][11] The game employs the same narrative structure as the first season, where player choice in one episode will have a permanent impact on future story elements. The player choices recorded in save files from the first season and the additional episode 400 Days carry over into the second season.[12] Clementine, who was the player's companion during the first season, is the player-character in Season Two.[13]

Development

When Telltale Games acquired the right to make video games based on The Walking Dead comics, they signed a contract for a "multi-year, multi-platform, multi-title" license.[14] This license went into effect after the success of the first season of The Walking Dead, when Telltale commissioned a second series of games based on the franchise.[15] The first season was considered highly successful, helping to revitalize the adventure game genre which had been in decline since the mid-1990s,[16][17] with Telltale being recognized as one of the top development studios in 2012.[18]

During an interview on IGN's Up at Noon, writer Gary Whitta teased more The Walking Dead from Telltale sooner than later. "You won't have to wait for season two to play more Walking Dead", he claimed. "I can tell you what you already know, which is season two is coming. There's not much to say because it really is very early... it's a way off", said Whitta. "But, knowing that it's a way off, and knowing that people are hungry for more Walking Dead there may very well be more Walking Dead from Telltale before season two. We may have a little something extra for you between season one and two". Whitta continued to tease that something is in the works right now "that will make the wait for season two slightly less agonizing".[19] This was revealed at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June 2013 to be an additional episode called The Walking Dead: 400 Days that is available as downloadable content for the first season. It introduces five new characters that journalists expect to carry into Season Two. 400 Days will use data about the player's decisions in season one, and decisions made in 400 Days will carry into Season Two.[20]

Writing for Season Two was done to contrast the work they had completed in the first season. Specifically, by changing the player's perspective from that of Lee to Clementine, they wanted to create a "different sort of agency" that the player will experience. Instead of the player, as Lee, looking to help Clementine and others, the player as Clementine would now have to determine who to trust to help her. They also emphasize this new perspective by using several camera angles from a low perspective, to emphasize that Clementine is a child compared to others she meets.[21] The developers also recognized that they needed to avoid making Clementine feel like a "carbon copy" of the character from the first season and instead something crafted by the player's decisions. To resolve this they created the first scenario of the game that would separate her from the familiar characters and to make it feel a result of the player's actions, so that the player would directly connect with Clementine's situation.[22]

As with the previous season, Telltale plans to release Season Two for Microsoft Windows and OS X computers, on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, and on iOS devices.[23] Telltale is currently working to bring the first season and its DLC to the Ouya console, and is planning on releasing the second season for Ouya as well.[24]

The season was formally announced in late October 2013. The announcement showcased Clementine as the playable character for the game, set sometime after the events of the first series. Telltale's CEO Dan Conners stated that this will put "players in the shoes of a lead role that will challenge their expectations of how to survive in a world where no one can be trusted".[25] The first episode was released in the fourth quarter of 2013, with subsequent episodes released four to six weeks apart. A collector's DVD was announced to purchase at the end of the season, with those who pre-order the game (from the Telltale Games Store) receiving it for just the shipping and handling cost.[25]

Synopsis

Setting

The Walking Dead: Season Two follows on the first game, and coincides with events of the comic, in which a zombie apocalypse has occurred, turning humans that are bitten or die into zombies, or "walkers"; the only way to stop this conversion is to damage the brain. While the game starts in Georgia, the setting moves to more northern locales as the survivors head towards Michigan, believing there is a large survivor camp there.

The second season follows Clementine (Melissa Hutchison) a young girl who has been able to survive the walkers thanks to the help of Lee Everett (Dave Fennoy). At the start of the apocalypse, Lee helps to protect Clementine and offers to help her find her parents who had gone to Savannah before the event. Along the way, they meet several characters, including Kenny (Gavin Hammon) who loses his wife and son to the attack, and the pair Omid and Christa (Owen Thomas and Mara Junot, respectively). Once in Savannah, Clementine is kidnapped by a crazed man seeking revenge against Lee for the loss of his family, and in his haste to find her, Lee is bitten by a walker. Kenny, Omid, and Christa help Lee to get to the hotel where Clementine is being help, but Kenny is apparently killed by a walker attack. Lee tells Omid and Christa to wait at the outskirts of town where he will bring Clementine to them before he turns. Lee manages to rescue Clementine, but passes out as she sees her parents both whom have become walkers. Clementine drags Lee to safety, and moments before he turns, he instructs her to where Omid and Christa should be waiting, and then may urge her to shoot him to prevent him from turning fully. This is a choice left to the player, but regardless of the option, Clementine escapes the city and begins to search for her friends.

The second season introduces several new characters. One group that Clementine encounters includes Luke (Scott Porter), his friend Nick (Brian Bremer), Nick's uncle Pete (Brian Sommer), Carlos (Kid Beyond) and his teenage daughter Sarah (Louisa Mackintosh), Alvin (Dorian Lockett), and the pregnant Rebecca (Shay Moore) whom Alvin watches over. They later meet a second group which includes Walter (Kiff VandenHeuvel), Matthew (Wylie Herman), and Sarita (Julia Farmer). Finally, the second episode introduces a third group led by Carver (Michael Madsen) and includes Bonnie (Erin Yvette) who was previously introduced in the 400 Days add-on content from the first season.

Plot

This is a broad overview of the plot. Certain decisions made by the player in both this game, and, if available, from the First Season and the 400 Days add-on content, will alter details of specific events.

Following the events of the first season, Clementine was able to regroup with Omid and Christa, and Christa is now in the late months of the pregnancy that was revealed in Season One. However, while stopping at an abandoned service station to clean up, Omid is killed by a scavenger using Clementine's gun that she set down for a moment, before the scavenger is herself killed by Christa. Sixteen months later, Christa has apparently lost her child and her relationship with Clementine has become strained. When they are set on by scavengers, Clementine is separated from Christa and falls into a nearby river. After washing ashore, Clementine is surrounded by walkers but saved by a group of survivors staged at a nearby house, which include Luke, Pete, Nick, Alvin, Rebecca, Carlos and Sarah. The group distrusts Clementine at first, believing she might have been bitten, but she proves her worth and health to them.

The next day, Pete is lost to walkers when he, Nick, and Clementine go scavenging for food, leaving Nick devastated. When Clementine and Sarah stay behind at the home while the others search out more food, a strange and distrustful man appears and snoops around the house. The group recognize the man as Carver who has been looking for their group, and they make plans to evacuate the next day. They approach a ski lodge, where Nick shoots and kills a man stationed at a small house at the foot of the mountain. At the lodge, they discover another survivor group, including Walter, Sarita, and Kenny, who Clementine is overjoyed to see and later learns he managed to survive his apparent death. Luke's group agrees to stay the night at the lodge but remain distrustful of Walter's group, and Clementine senses a change in Kenny. During the evening, Bonnie (a character from 400 Days) appears and asks for food, and Walter gives her some of their extra supplies.

Luke discovers that the man Nick shot was Walter's partner, and Clementine works to defuse the situation. However, as a storm approaches, the lodge is set on by walkers brought by the noise of the wind generator. The party is saved by another group of survivors, but they are aghast when they see it is led by Carver and directed to the lodge by Bonnie. Carver takes them all hostage while they search for Rebecca, who had gone into hiding as she knows she is carrying Carver's child; in the ensuing chaos, Kenny kills one of Carver's men and he retaliates by killing Walter. To avoid further bloodshed, the rest of the group, excluding Luke, who went missing, give themselves up, and Carver prepares the group to move down to their camp the next day.
